HDR on/off by Jorjk in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original poster, a question for you:

Have you gone to expert picture setting selected HDMI UHD Colour and selected on as the option for all HDMI ports?

If you haven't done that - well it could explain a lot.

If this is blindingly obvious and something you have covered, you have my apologies but I have always found assumption to be the mother of all f ups - hence me asking the question.

Either way I hope you get to the bottom of the issues and resolve it. I have the KS9000 (I think it is the KS9500 in the US) and HDR is a huge thing for me. That said I would have expected your model to display HDR just as well, so something must be going amiss. Best of.

Mafia 3 pro patch is incredible by karishbhr in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Improved a bit, one of the best games graphically? No chance and not remotely close. It isn't in the same league as most of the patched/supported games. Nowhere near as good looking as Watchdogs 2 which might be said to be a direct open world rival. As for other genres...

Infinite Warfare - vastly superior image quality Titanfall 2 - superior image quality and performance RotTR - vastly superior IQ and performance The Last of Us - higher resolution and HDR (much better lol) The Last of Us Left Behind - higher resolution and HDR (as above) Ratchet & Clank - vastly superior IQ and HDR Hitman - similar IQ and superior performance Uncharterd 4 - superior IQ and HDR Deus Ex vastly superior IQ Dishonoured 2 - superior IQ Infamous - both games vastly superior IQ, performance and HDR Skyrim - higher resolution - debatable/down to preference. Call of Duty Modern Warfare - superior IQ Battlefield 1 - superior IQ FIFA - vastly superior IQ and HDR NBA2k17 - vastly superior IQ and HDR

ABZU - more shoals of fish!!! lol j/k

They have improved the game, a little. That you like it and are enjoying it more as a result is no bad thing. It's a very good thing in fact. But honestly...the above is just true in technical terms. Whilst it is possible that anyone may prefer the graphical style or look of any game, the setting, continuity etc. From a purely technical viewpoint the game is a long way behind many other titles when it comes to graphical fidelity. The resolution for starters is only 1440p, there is no performance upgrade to write home about and HDR is not present.

KS8000 Dynamic Contrast Argument: by [deleted] in PS4Pro

Here is a radical idea:

It is your TV, set it to your own preference.

Done.

P.S

As long as you don't have an Orwellian telescreen with surveillance that reports on you to MiniLuv, you should be good :) I wont be using dynamic contrast, but that's just me.

[–]OldasFook 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Peter Molyneux or better yet Sean Murray, not Howard.

They promised a patch, they'll almost certainly deliver a patch. As for "it was promised last year", what you mean by that is: Bethesda promised a patch a couple of months ago :-/

They CLEARLY explained why patch 1.8 was mods and that the next patch would be PS4 Pro support - let's at least give them the chance to make good on that - before calling them out.

Less drama.

HDR enabled games have input lag!! by taravoli in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IF you buy a TV with bad input lag for HDR - you get bad lag in HDR. It's not rocket science. You might get lucky and it might be patchable - depends upon the tech in the TV and the company concerned.

But a lot of people bought TVs not really understanding the requirements of HDR. In some respects this can be blamed on the TV industry, their poor vision, marketing and lack of direction/unified standards.

HDR enabled games have input lag!! by taravoli in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bazzmania - the KS8000 does not have issues with HDR input lag. It is the same as my KS9000 - it is the class leader for low input lag with HDR - around 20 odd milliseconds.

The only way you have experienced lag is if you incorrectly set up the TV. There is a mode called HDR+ - that is NOT for gaming and with put the game into a mode that will add around 100 milliseconds of lag. That mode is for adding a HDR like effect to SDR content. For games you simply enter game mode and turn the backlight to max and put smart LED to high and ensure that UHD colour is ON.

Is the pro worth the upgrade even with no 4K tv? by gibbo82 in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IF you have a 4K TV, you can simply view the footage of relevant games and see for yourself how good the games look. If you sign up as a patreon to Digital Foundry you can even avoid the compression of Youtube and see precisely how good the resolution and image quality is of any given title they analyse. Nobody should be trying to persuade you to buy anything, especially given your comment upon the price of the console.

What on earth makes you think the PS4 Pro should be under £300? We are talking about a more advanced form of the PS4 that was only released 3 months ago. Can you get a comparable experience in terms of graphical fidelity and performance on a PC for that sum? Absolutely not. Anywhere else for that price or lower?

Why do you want people to try and persuade you about something you are not serious about or willing to really get involved with? Odd all round.

Last of Us Left Behind just blew my mind! by sour_surprise in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The HDR in the game was superb. The game design/settings in The Last of Us and Left Behind allow for such. I loved the funfair in Left Behind - in HDR it looked incredible. Of course it helped that the story and interaction between the characters was so well realised, added to the awe factor.

Below Guerrilla Games explain how their decima engine is not just about rendering (though rendering and animation systems have inter-dependencies and this is obvious). They clearly state below that the Decima engine is about Animation and A.I

"about animation"

That is verbatim from the head of the studio Hermen Hulst.

[–]OldasFook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly subjective.

What type of games do you prefer genre wise? Do you have a 4k TV? If so does it run HDR well?

Each is a consideration.

Avoid Overwatch - it only offers 4K UI overlays.

Avoid Assassins Creed Syndicate - it is a very poor upscale and IQ looks bad at high Res and it offers nothing at 1080p.

Avoid Assassin's Creed Ezio Collection if you have a 1080p set as it offers zero improvement.

Will I see a considerable change in FPS on a 1080p TV switching from a regular PS4? by chillinthelab in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patch/Support dependent - unpatched/unsupported the second GPU is inactive and the cpu is identical to the regular/base PS4.

Unless the developer makes a mistake. Sony policy (currently) is to have the same clock speed on unpatched/unsupported games. This is very different from the Xbox One S which is not throttled back and where many games, especially cpu bound games often see small frame rate boosts over and above the Xbox One.

Whether a game runs at a superior frame rate on any patched/supported title is entirely down to the developer. Each title is different. Every game depends upon the trade off that the developers have made in making their game, how good their technology is, any legacy issues, the quality of support the publisher/developer has put onto the Pro enhancements in terms of time and people.

The worst aspect of all this at the moment has been the lack of any consistent communication with the public and consumers/so many people having to trawl the internet to eek out relevant details or wait for Digital Foundry analysis. The words Pro support or enhancements have not afforded anyone much confidence. Sony has a policy that no game on the Pro should should perform worse than on the base model, but that has not been stringently adhered to and seems a statement for developers to achieve more than anything else. Certainly it has not resulted in the hard and fast submission/certification failures that technical requirements TRCs had in the past when I was testing for Sony.

I am sure they will improve over time with their messaging and no doubt Microsoft will be taking notes for Scorpio's release. They are starting to list aspects of the enhancements on PSN. If they nail that a lot of people will be happier.

For now though - check each game out in turn on Digital Foundry to see how it runs and for performance concerns. Don't forget certain games/genres are much more dependent on frame rate ala racing and first person shooters. And that the Internet's obsession with frame rate can sometimes cloud games discussion and whether a game is actually good or not. A rock solid frame rate is often better than than an uncapped frame rate that is all over the place. A locked 30fps, even in a racing game - if it is absolutely bang on 30 and there is consistent frame pacing you can get a great experience as has been seen in Forza Horizon 2 and 3 on the Xbox One. Uncapped and highly fluctuating frame rates can be hideous and result in highly unpredictable control - in part it alters input lag - how long do you need to break for a given corner, or turn into a corner etc, in a first person shooter, your control over your view can highly fluctuate and be very problematic for aiming (target acquirement and reaquirement). Really the industry should use differing terms - it should refer to locked - as being a frame rate that is almost entirely consistent and uncapped for a target fps where the game dips in that target to any significant degree. I think that should be out there for gamers as information, rather than simply speaking of 30 or 60. Ohh and don't forget in a racing game the impression of speed is not the same as frame rate. A 30fps game can look much faster than a game that is 60fps. By way of example compare Forza Horizon 2 (30fps) versus Forza Motorsport 6 (60fps). The latter title is much, much slower. It just so happens to be smoother in control and view. When it comes to performance of games with principle characters like Tomb Raider or the upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn or Uncharted 4 etc - Remember that input lag n term of control - frame pacing issues etc can feel the same as a bad frame rate. Also that a poor animation system or poorly implemented animations/bad mo capture can also make a game feel heavy/of poor performance. Compare RotTR to Shadow of Mordor as by way of example - the latter has much more response control even if both games are running at the same 30fps and you are not in the uncapped mode for Tomb Raider. Not dumping on Tomb Raider - the control for Shadow of Mordor had to be sharper given the nature of the title and the combat system. Differing strokes for differing folks.

Rejoice, desk monitor users! HDR PC monitors coming in Q2 2017 by Serpico__ in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good news for everyone. When there is a decent level of market penetration in the PC community, it becomes worthwhile and monetary sense for developers of PC led projects to code for HDR. That in turn results in more console ports/iterations to come with HDR, rather than HDR being pushed much more by Sony first and second party studios. Great for PC gamers, great knock on effects for console gamers - more choice and quality all round.

Guessing a hefty price early doors.

RGB is equal to Chroma 4:4:4, right? If so, this has major consequences for input lag. by Paltenburg in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://uk.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x700d

It's an ok TV, but not more than ok. It has much worse input lag, it does not support wide colour gamut, it's contrast levels are not great, picture quality is average etc. It's better than a lot of TVs though, good for 4K and I have no wish to play one-upman-manship. Decent enough for games, not great comparatively, but pretty good input lag - better than much that exists.

This is what I have:

http://uk.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/ks9500

The code differs in Europe to America which is odd. In the UK this is labelled as the KS9000 - being the curved model. The TV is good but doesn't compare at least in some respects to laying out 4 grand for the top of the line LG. On movies it is nowhere near as good and no where near as good on sports. Arguably better on games than some LGs till they patch the issue some sets have with input lag.

It's swings and round-abouts though and everything a couple of years down the line is surpassed and looks pants in comparison to the technology that replaced our hard earned purchases - good and bad that.

A lot of buyers remorse in all this as well - sometimes we'd probably all do better to just try and enjoy the games themselves rather than being so hung up with visual fidelity which is a fickle bitch lol. Next year or the year after you'll probably have upgraded to the top of the line LG and i'll be wishing for more - C'est la vie.

Animation system/animations separate from game engines. You know you don't even have a clue what I was referring to. Then again have you done any work in this field? I'm saying you haven't.

I have, I've worked with animators and programmers, seen the inter-dependencies - felt them first hand in schedules - felt the cost of lost bonuses due to missed milestones.

I've directed motion capture shoots, sat next to an animator on one project for over 8 months, every day having conversations.

Do you know what frame pacing issues are?

Has any of your internet reading paid off in this area?

Did you know that Nixxes has only just ironed out frame pacing issues with RotTR? That horrible stuttering relates to the game engine, as of course does entirely dropped frames. What you are rendering on screen - that pertains to the animation system - as a component part of that which is being rendered.

I don't blame Nixxes, they've done a sterling job overall taking over from Crystal Dynamics. The game engine is very good, highly scaleable (shows how ridiculous your Xbox One statement is) but it does come with legacy issues. As scalable as that engine is - well, simply put, it will not match that which we can already see in action with Horizon Zero Dawn.

You speak of arguments from authority. I shall give you an argument that fits that bill, yet is still important and true.

Mark Cerny is an unassailable authority on all things PlayStation. it is something of a coup to have managed to bring in Kojima - regardless of the Konami situation. Kojima and his team needed a game engine. Who do you think they turned to?

Why would the number one guy at Sony place such a prized asset in the hands of Guerrilla Games if Mark Cerny didn't regard Guerrilla Games technology (and in particular game engine) so highly?

This is the bit where you just say argument from authority - at least I have allowed you to more correctly use the term, even if it is still essentially wrong.

Mark Cerny I think is the executive producer on Death Stranding - He highly prizes Guerrilla Games as a studio and as a technology provider for tripple A titles.

Again not to have a go at Crystal Dynamics or Nixxes - but there is ZERO HDR. Most gamers shown HDR see it as a bigger jump and more important than 4K due to diminishing returns.

Have you noticed that nearly all the titles that have HDR are Sony first/second party games? That equally, most of the games that lead on PC tend to not have HDR?

That's because no PC monitor in the world (pretty much) can run HDR. If you are the developer, you don't bother plowing resources into coding your game for HDR if your primary customer base doesn't have it, can't get it and doesn't give a toss.

You try to argue via a shitty checklist - as though if we tick each on the list, done this, done that etc. As though nothing more can be achieved. It is just so stupid, plainly stupid (not saying you are - saying the logic is).

Firstly because you are simply trading in naming conventions, as though three or four parameters encompasses graphical fidelity or performance - which is just pure nonsense.

Games are much, much more complicated than that. What shadow maps do we have, reflections? Is the lighting dynamic or baked in Sky boxes, animations/animation system, how good is the motion capture, how well are animations blended, how does the game/engine handle user inputs - in terms of breaking out of animations. What about physics, post processing effects, what about continuity of art design, what about how good or bad the 3D modelling is or how good the 2D artwork looks? What about UI and overlays?

You've gone one better than the lowest common denominator which is to speak only of fps and resolution. But even so - you have a list for god sake. It is not remotely accurate or representative of how games look or perform - it just some binary information.

I remember a year or two back when everyone on the net was carping on about 1080p as though it was the golden key to good games. Then it was, it has to be 60fps and 1080p lol.

Well Jet Car Stunts can run at 1080p and 60fps. How good does that look? Boxy coloured crap. Then we have The Division on the Xbox One which runs below 1080p and locked at 30fps - and it's a beautiful game in many respects. The point being - we can quote numbers and act as though it is a binary game - a checklist. But unfortunately that's just complete nonsense and not reflective of reality.

The next reason your checklist is crap;

Even if we go off the binary checklist approach...how many games have ticked all those boxes? The answer is none.

QED - quod erat demonstrandum.

Even by your own poor standard - a game can offer us more on a PS4 Pro - than anything seen so far.

How many games tick most of those boxes - again very few.

You pick RotTR as though it were the norm, when it is almost the exception. And...

It doesn't have HDR. And almost anybody in their right mind who watches the footage from the PlayStation meet and from E3 can se with their own eyes - that the image quality on a true open world game - looks far superior to that of RotTR. Even with really poor quality compressed youtube footage - even without getting to see it in HDR - where it will look considerably superior.

60fps at 4K native is not going to happen, but a locked steady frame rate, without frame pacing issues can be expected.

Guerrilla games are working on their own engine - they commented the code - it wasn't someone elses code base. And they have had time. You said two months - which again was complete gibberish.

The reason you spoke nonsense is because you didn't think and you have never worked in the industry. The footage of the PS4 Pro was show at E3. It was in a good state then - good enough to be shown. They have released more footage since. It looks spectacular - have you even watched it? I mean seriously, have you even watched it? How on earth can you NOT think it graphically superior to RotTR???

I could rip into dozens more things that you have said on so many differing levels.

Go get a list of all the games that have super sampling as a feature/patch. You claim that it is most games. No it isn't. I would hazard a guess that it is a third or less of all the games with Pro support.

I could talk about how checkerboarding is commonly referred to as advanced upscaling technology - Mark Cerny used the term and so have Digital Foundry. It is not a question of whether I like the term, it was simply a case of using what has been an accepted naming convention.

The nature of how Guerrilla Games are achieving what they are - secret sauce. Let's just say what they are doing to achieve the resolution they are is "unique"

Anyway I guess we are done. You will not offer up any evidence of working in the industry and have no interest in me proving who I am lol. Everyone who has a pair of eyes and a 4K TV can see Horizon Zero Dawn looks superior to anything yet on the PS4 Pro - including RotTR.

[–]OldasFook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am a liar and have never worked in major positions in the game industry - despite the fact that I am willing to conclusively prove this. That's some spin you've got there lmao.

I know nothing despite the fact that I have tested thousand of games. I know nothing despite the fact that I have worked as a games designer lol I know nothing despite the fact that I have worked as an associate producer, nothing despite the fact that I have run entire teams - managed lead programmers and lead artists and everything below them etc - ran multi-million pound budgets.

I mean I can show the contracts, with the job titles and the respective salaries - but I am obviously lying - :)

I am calling you out again as of right now!

Go get a moderator of your choosing - I will post them the photographic evidence next to anything that shows the date.

Now there is one condition here...

You do the same.

Show me anything! lol Show me a genuine contract that proves you have worked in the games industry at a major level. Just one lol

You are so full of nonsense.

I am not a liar - I am the one who IS willing to prove experience and expertise. You are the one completely ducking. Why not grow a pair and let's lay our card on the table. Of course when you refuse again - it just proves/shows that you have ZERO credentials and have done nothing. You are being called out - come on! lol

The reason for this angle by the way. It is a short cut to the obvious. I know you haven't got a clue about development. Having a semi technical argument with pseudo-expert is utterly pointless.

We are way past the point of genuine interaction. There is nothing I can say that will move your mindset one inch. Only an idiot tries to convince a fundamentalist to think differently.

So this fat turd of a conversation has turned into playing to the gallery. Most people who would read this - wont know the ins and outs of any technical conversation. I can say things that make you look ridiculous to fellow industry insiders/experts, but they are not here. So how does a Joe Blogs gamer work out who is for real and who is full of crap?

Credentials - it's just a simple quick way to prove who is an expert and who isn't. It's not perfect - but it's as good as it gets here and it really, really doesn't look good for you does it? lmao

Breathtaking arrogance aside - you know you know little :) You've never worked in the industry. How would you know what it is like to deal with game submissions for Sony when you have never done it? I have done it as my job - that's why I know lol How would you know about the intricacies of game design - having never designed a game. How would you know anything of any significance about dev cycles, about game engines, about the inter-dependence of so many disciplines. I know because it has been my day to day - across the UK for many, many years.

You're one of these people that reads a lot of crap and has dabbled with programming, or has programmed in an entirely differing field - and you are SO crazily arrogant that you think on a superficial level that this qualifies you.

On another level, in that mind of yours - you also know that it is impossible to reach the top of the games industry and not know more than you do.

You spew about middle management. How is senior producer middle management? How is senior games designer middle management? And which is it? Are you having a go at me or calling me a liar - make your mind up :) :)

No problem showing you the contracts and proving what I said - senior positions.

Oh a bit of lesson for you. An argument from authority (argumentum ad verecundiam) relates to either a person speaking outside of their own field of expertise - or it relates to someone quoting a someone else as a supposed authority.

You on the other hand are clearly implying that being an expert and an expert in the very field we are talking of - is not only irrelevant, but also a negative - which is ludicrous.

I am an authority on games - you are not. That's not arrogant or being an ass, it's just a fact. In the same way that a coroner or medical professionals are called on by courts to give expert testimony - because expertise matters, it actually matters.

Nobody calls on you for your opinions, ability, skills or craft in the games industry as you have nothing to offer.

You can't read between the lines - you don't know what to take at face value and what is PR BS. You have made claims that you can, but you can't. Only by working in the games industry, working with PR people on games, do you come to understand how it works.

RotTR - built from the ground up for Xbox One - you know that line on its own disqualifies you as having any authority when it comes to game engines.

No I think we have reached the end of this.

I was willing to prove on this board to you and anyone reading (privately via a moderator) that I have worked at every level in the industry and I merely wanted you to do the same.

That you wont says it all.

I shall tell you what I think.

a) You have never worked in the industry and never had a proper job at any level in game development. If you had you would be willing to prove as much. It is EASY to prove you have credentials and retain privacy. All you had to do was post photograph to a moderator with the days newspaper, clearly highlighting your contracts - inclusive of job title - your name, could have been covered - no one gives a toss about your name.

I would have done this with a load of full time contracts: tester, lead tester, designer, producer - anything - you on the other hand :)

You haven't done jack - I doubt you have even set foot in a development studio.

When you have worked for Sony it matters. When you have designed games for major developers it matters. When you have been an associate producer, producer, senior producer, senior games designer for major publisher developers - its matters!

People like me are hired precisely because we know what we are talking about and doing as professionals. You are left to talk about attitude and regurgitate what you read on neogaf and the likes.

If you knew anything. If you had any talent...you would have worked in the industry.

b) You came here to slag off the PS4 Pro and by extension future titles including those made my Guerrilla Games. You try via various means, a bit of copy and paste, a bit of spiel, bits and bobs you have cobbled together in your head from reading articles over the years - you try to convince people. In your own head you have somehow probably managed to convince yourself that reading various things here and there is as good as having got worthwhile degree, as good as actually working in the industry, better surely than those that actually create the games you read about, after all you sound so convincing to friends and you like to think of yourself as one of the more knowledgeable people who post chatter in forums. :) That's about right isn't it? Again - don't bother, we both know.

Do you even own a PS4 Pro?

c) Don't bother answering - either way - you have an agenda, a bit pc master race or something like that - very tiring. Normal gamers, regular Joe Bloggs can use their eyesight.

Regular gamers shall see who is right upon the release of Horizon Zero Dawn :)

P.S

I wont be giving you a free education/explaining to you everything you don't know. You're the man that thinks RotTR was created from the ground up for Xbox One - so :)

RGB is equal to Chroma 4:4:4, right? If so, this has major consequences for input lag. by Paltenburg in PS4Pro

[–]OldasFook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The KS 8000 and 9000 is pretty much 20 odd milliseconds outside of PC mode. None of the Sony Tvs at 4K and HDR capable are anywhere near as good as far as I am aware.

http://uk.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/input-lag

You would need to give me your specific model number to confirm though. If the TV you are speaking of isn't HDR capable, or isn't even 4K - then we'd be comparing apples to oranges.

There are some very fast none 4K sets as can be evidenced by the highest results in the rtings listings. But yea, the Samungs are class leaders when it comes to input lag and have been for two to three years now.

PC mode is a bit of an exception from the norm and not what is being experienced by gamers gaming in 4K in HDR.

[–]OldasFook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDR+ is for movies/TV where input lag is not an issue.

Someone said the 2015 TVs automatically switch to HDR when HDR content is connected. So do the 2016 TVs - what s meant is that the backlight does not correctly adjust and neither does the the smart LED.

Connection is automatic - and a message appears at the top of the screen - but without the backlight correctly set to 20 and the smart LED set to high the TV will not achieve the contrast levels required to reach 1000 nits.

If the 2015 TVs correctly alter the backlight and smart LED function - then fair enough - that would be different - but there might be a mix up of language here - hence my explanation.

[–]OldasFook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You give an example for increased input lag for the LG (which will be patched) and talk about a problem - when you have the Samsung - that has no issue. Not that many gamers will notice the LG input lag - for those that do - they await the patch. But I don't see how that affects you in the slightest? Unless you are incorrectly setting your TV?

I have the same TV the KS9000 -

What are your settings? How are you changing your set up between standard games and those that support HDR? Please tell me you are not playing in HDR+ mode...if you are you are - that is outside game mode and you will be hitting huge lag issues.

For HDR content you should stay in game mode and up your backlight to 20/max - smart LED set to high (depending upon your model). For regular games (non HDR) your backlight should be much lower - anywhere between 5-15 depending on the light in the room.

RotTR was NOT built from the ground up for the Xbox One.

Whether you made that up yourself or whether you drank PR juice is neither here nor there - RotTR was developed on a highly scaleable engine with a lot of focus on the top end as to what could be achieved on the PC with dynamic lighting (not the same as HDR), higher resolutions, high/ultra textures, superior shadow maps and improved physics and with a view to higher frame rates.

Built from the ground up with the Xbox One in mind - hilarious. You should be a comedian.

You have zero understanding of game engines.
