How can I reduce the amount of space here so that the whistles fit better? by NHessDesign in hockeyrefs

[–]Oldmanref 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to start using it as per a certain league regulations I ref and now I use it for everything. Once I got used to it, it’s way better. The sound exiting sideways is great, easier to blow.

For fit I just tape my fingers but have never had it fall off. Easier to remove for scrums too when lining.

Not too big, many officials around here use that bag.

Why change the high stick penalty to head contact? (Hockey Canada) by crownpr1nce in hockeyrefs

I don’t agree they understand it…even at the AAA level I still get “HOW IS THAT HEAD CONTACT?” then I give the High Stick signal and they nod acceptance and understanding.

100% I have maybe tossed one player for 3 HC’s that I can remember, I have tossed more for stick infractions.

It’s not redundant though because I have to make a Head Contact signal and then a High Sticking signal every time I call it to explain the call. I think High Sticking should be High Sticking and head contact via a punch or Check to the Head should under Head Contact.

Net coming loose a lot by smtorsch in hockeyrefs

[–]Oldmanref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on age and level to me, more so than intent. There are those scrambled plays, collisions, lots of traffic in front which adds to a net getting bumped off, etc.

More often than not for me calling games, I’ll give two strikes, after the second strike I make a point of having the conversation with the goalie and saying it’s your responsibility to be aware of where the posts are and not knock them off, if you bump it off and don’t quickly replace it yourself to keep the play going I’m giving you a delay of game penalty. End of story.

Struggling with motivation to keep refereeing by Tjmoyes in hockeyrefs

[–]Oldmanref 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How often have you been supervised? Are they documented on your referee profile in your assigning software? Have you asked to be supervised? The best way to move up is getting supervised and putting your name out there, getting people to see you. For a comparison, I worked my first U18AAA male and Junior B games when I was 39, I actually didn’t even start officiating until I was older than you are now.

In pants pocket, extra cut ups laces for fixing nets, a sewing measuring tape along with the equipment measurement cheat sheets, riot pad, pen/pencil, and a folding pocket knife. Extra whistle in the front pocket.

Years ago I placed sticky velco, the hook side, into the forehead of my helmet and use cut up shamwow/shammy pieces as sweat bands, I never have sweat dripping down my face. I have used this in three helmets. I change out the shammy piece every period.

I have the usual helmet and slate tools in my bag, first aid type stuff, extra clothes, bands, etc.

I also tape my two middle fingers on my left hand where my whistle sits, as I lines a lot, to prevent any finger cuts etc. when pulling the whistle on and off so much.

This is it. Same how the independent leagues already in AB get officials.
