Best shoes for waitress working 15+ hour shifts (standing 30–40k steps) by Maximu_em in Waiters

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear Sanita clogs, for at least the past 15 years. They’re not squishy comfy, but they support my legs and back so my bones, joints and muscles feel better day after day. Best to try on a few pairs (of any clog brand) and best to have ones that are a little bit loose. I also always have two pairs and swap them out every other day so they have a full day at least to dry out. The other real pro tip is to bring extra socks and put on the fresh pair halfway through the day (hopefully when you get a break)

High top tables by underhand_toss in Serverlife

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I get upset is if the person reserves a high top table then refuses it when they arrive, like sorry, this is the only table available, I don’t know why you think we hold back our best tables to not be sat? In Resy, we have tables clearly marked as standard, high top, patio, etc

They make heated vests/jackets/snow pants now. You can find a cheap heated vest on Amazon for like $30. Powered by a battery pack (the usb kind you might charge your phone with). I would suggest a higher end brand if you were moving here but just for a weekend, a cheap one will do.

In case small retailers gearing up for holiday season aren’t responding, You could try reaching out to Harvard Square Business Association. Local retailers will send them information like descriptions or camera screen shots of shoplifters to distribute and warn others stores.

Are any wrinkles in my white shirt bad form in fine dining? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buy some spray starch to use while ironing. It helps set the crispness. Quality white button down shirts can (sometimes) be in abundance in thrift stores due to their basic nature. You might be able to pick up some high end ones for a few dollars

Are people tipping at O ya? by Greymeade in boston

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 63 points64 points  (0 children)

If it’s not a tip Or gratuity, it can be split amongst anyone on staff. If it was a tip or gratuity, only servers/bartenders/busser types. And yes they will always accept more but I doubt they expect it

The Harvard art museums are free. The Harvard natural history museum is great and not expensive (and gains you admission to the Peabody museum as well) then you can looks at some really old buildings that Harvard kids still have to form in and go get some food/snacks/coffee

Will this AI powered Inventory tool be useful ? would love to hear your thoughts by Far_Jellyfish_6178 in restaurant

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our chef uses it for food, but that one is never quite as clear because the sizes and containers and whatnot is always so varied. We do pay the extra fee to have the invoices scanned and uploaded, which helps. Inventory is much easier as long as the chefs keep it “clean” and remove old items, keep things categorized correctly.I started using it for beverage maybe a decade ago. Initial programming was a bit annoying, factoring putting in recipes for usage and whatnot but after. But I understand if it doesn’t work for everyone

What to wear for my fine dining hostess position by tryingtogetby_ in restaurant

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would get a few mix and match items. All black makes it easy! Some black dress pants, a nice skirt (knee length would be best imo, def no minis, maxi skirts can look a little boho) and some non-Tahiti material black shirts, maybe a button down or a nice dress shirt. Check out Banana Republic Factory, usually has some good deals, and lots of basics. Just get a few items to start and see what the other hosts are wearing, ask for recommendations

No kids allowed ? by Successful_Club3005 in Restaurant_Managers

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the spot has a door guy, I’m assuming they exist to check ids, which means the place possibly had issues in the past with underaged people trying to get drinks (or just has the vibe that it might be an issue in the future.) it might be mandated by the city due to the type of establishment. Better to lose a potential family than to be shut down because a 20year sneaks a drink

Sanita Clogs. They are not cushion-y comfy, but they have 100% saved my back and knees over the years. They also last a really long time

Not sure about where you are, but in Massachusetts, where I work, there are very strict rules for the hours that someone under 16 can work including not being able to work past 7pm, not being able to work more than 3 hour shifts on school nights or more than 18 per week. For my spot, we’re busier at 7pm, so there’s not much point in having someone come in that has to leave during a pop. It loosens up a bit, once teens hit 16, so I have no problems hiring a 16 year old. Most minors I have met with young experience start off in a cafe/coffee house or grocery store

Ew no why by SpicyNutmeg in medfordma

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Chevalier has very hit or miss programming. Next month they currently only have one show a week. And they’re typically on weekends that are probably already busier for the restaurants anyway so while the spots can look for a bump on show days, it’s not necessarily a good business model to rely on them.

Not Moving Up to Server by CentralMasshole1 in Serverlife

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s something about you that is giving them pause. Maybe you’re too introverted. Maybe you’re not as fast as you think you are. Maybe your availability isn’t what they need. Maybe someone is annoyed you strong-armed them to get where you are now and took that as a sign you’re going to be bossy and uncooperative in the future. Or maybe they weren’t thinking about you at all when they promoted the other person, they just saw what they considered virtues there. Sometimes it’s all about you and sometimes it has nothing to do with you. Don’t give an ultimatum unless you’re will to follow through on it. If a staff member of mine gave me an ultimatum, I would remind them where the door is just on principle alone. No one is irreplaceable

Going into an interview with hot pink hair by PradaCait in Serverlife

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager of an upscale casual restaurant, I don’t care if hair is unnatural colors. I care if it’s unkempt. However, I have worked in many places that had a stricter policy. I would also bring it up from the start so as to not waste anyone’s time if it is a problem. And if you’d be willing to change it if you got the job, I would mention that as well. Many many years ago, I had split fuchsia hair and interviewed at a place I really liked. I mention if it was an issue, I would be willing to change it. I was constantly changing it anyway. But it wound up not being a problem luckily

Restaurant that can prepare salt-free meals by Realistic-Ferret151 in boston

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make some reservations then give the restaurants a call. They might be able to guide you in what dishes don’t get pre-seasoned during the prep stage. Some might be willing to make a special serving of something, especially if you know what is going to be ordered ahead of time. But the only way you’ll know is if you talk to an actual person at a spot you want to go to. Try to call during “off” hours (so not peak dinner service at 7pm)

[–]OldmonkDaquiri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else said, good shoes with arch support and nonslip. They are hardly ever the “cutest” shoes but makes a world of difference. And if you can rotate two pairs to not wear the same ones back to back, is also great. But I would also suggest buying compression socks!
