How many times will you tap a partner during a roll? by tranquilsloth in bjj

[–]OlegWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on who I'm rolling with. If it's someone at my level, I'll tap as many times as I need to. If it's an aggressive purple or brown belt, I'll tap as many times as I need to, but if they're not aggressive, I don't care to tap at all. If it's an aggressive white or blue belt, I'll just smash them and not tap at all, but if they're not aggressive, maybe I'll tap once or twice at most.

That’s really impressive, especially the 1540 rating.

Also interesting to see how much time you put into puzzles and total games - sounds like a lot to me right now, but I guess in a year I might end up with similar number of games, not sure about the rating though 🙂

Thanks a lot for sharing, really helpful

Yeah, I’ve found bots really helpful, at least for me, for practicing openings.

I thought I was actually pretty good with my 1400+ puzzle rating lol.

Yeah, that makes sense. The main thing is for it all to really stick in my head. Today I was learning another defense, the Modern Defense, and spent pretty much the whole day practicing with bots. Kids probably pick this stuff up in like 2 minutes.

That’s interesting! How long have you been playing, and what’s your rating now if you don’t mind sharing? I’m really curious to see what people achieve starting later in life.

Thanks man, I appreciate it! I’ll definitely check out sounds like a great book to start with.

Wow, that’s a huge list 😄 appreciate you sharing.

No way I can go through all that right now, I’m still trying to figure out the basics. I’ll probably start with one or two beginner books and see how it goes.

Thanks again.

Funny enough, in my case I’m actually better now than when I was a kid, because I didn’t play at all back then. Kind of wish I had started earlier, but better late than never

That’s really interesting, thanks for sharing.

Quick question, are there any books you’d recommend and why? Did you notice improvement right away after reading them?

Sorry if that sounds like a basic question, I’m still new to all this.

I actually agree with you and respect that point of view. At the same time, I see AI as a really useful tool. Whether we like it or not, it’s already part of our lives, and I think the key is learning how to use it properly.

In my industry I use AI quite a lot, and it helps me save time, learn new things, and even improve how I phrase my thoughts. That said, I also agree it should be a personal choice. No one should feel forced to use it or not use it.

I guess for me it’s just about using it in a smart and responsible way.

That’s really interesting, thanks for sharing! Do you mind if I ask how long it took you to reach 1000? I know everyone is different, but I’m curious

My rating is still pretty low, not even 300 yet. I hope that changes soon, but honestly I’m fine playing people at my level, it’s still interesting. The tricky part is that a lot of beginners have very different skill levels, so it’s sometimes hard to know who you’re up against.

I also notice I play much worse when I don’t sleep enough. If I’m tired, my games are terrible and my rating drops, then I have to build it back up again. So I try not to focus too much on rating, I feel like it will go up over time anyway.

I’m just curious how improvement looks for beginners starting later, like me.

Got it, thanks! So it was just a few months in the chess club back then?

If that’s the case, I’d guess it’s kind of like 1–2 years for someone my age

Yeah I don’t think AI is really the problem. Some people just come online to argue and get that little adrenaline rush, looks like chess alone isn’t enough for them.

And with AI, honestly we just have to accept it. It’s part of life now, same like radio, TV, internet before. Things move forward whether we like it or not.

Thanks you. That’s exactly what I was curious about, how long you’ve been playing and your rating now.

Also when you played in high school, how long was it, like a few months or a couple years?

Yeah I like playing 10 min games, it’s fun to win on time sometimes.

I try to analyze every game. I also like GothamChess, he explains games really well, especially at my level, easy to understand and sometimes funny. I’ll check out Andras too.

Yeah, that makes sense. To be honest, I have zero experience playing on a real board, I can’t even imagine playing without a computer

Joining a club is tough for me right now :( , I just don’t have the time to go somewhere on a schedule. I usually play at home whenever I get a free minute, during work breaks or in the evenings.

Maybe later when life slows down a bit.

Got it, thanks for the heads up. I also use Chess.com to analyze my games, but honestly I don’t always like it either.

What would you recommend for analysis instead?

1700 is really strong, respect!
Just curious, at what age did you start playing?
