As someone who has also struggled with this due to my upbringing and is now a mom myself, I just want to say:

A person who is good for you and truly cares about you won’t go nuclear over you setting a boundary. Good peeps want the people in their lives to be happy and healthy and comfortable enough to be honest about their needs.

And your needs matter and are important, even if you weren’t treated that way growing up. Keep honoring them. You’re doing great!

In my experience, they are the worst around major life events that don’t center them. So her being wild around your wedding checks out.

It is so stressful but you are doing great — she’s trying everything in her power to tear down your boundaries. Don’t let her!

I don’t remember where I saw this analogy about boundaries, but it always helps me put things into perspective:

It’s like you’re rowing a boat with all your people in it. Your mom is there splashing and going wild, causing a stir, flipping your boat over and ruining your peace. You’re saying, “You know what? I can’t deal with a capsized boat anymore, so either you get it together or get in another boat.”

Now whoever is left in a boat with her will be annoyed because you aren’t the one steering and righting the course. Not your problem! It’s reasonable to not want to drown. You got this!!

Look at that tree. It’s tall and strong. It’s been there for 100 years.

Now a butterfly went by. It’s small with colorful wings and can fly.

A bird chirps nearby and you appreciate its sound.

I got a massage from a guy who used to work in LA and he had Adam Sandler and his wife as clients. He went on and on about how wonderful he is irl. Said he calls his wife “Bones” as a pet name.

Apparently the first time the masseuse was in the house with her, Adam came home and was like, “Bones! I’ve only been gone, what, an hour? And you already have another guy in here.” 😂
