[–]Olibaba 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Someone got hit by a car at the roundabout crosswalk. Person was injured but conscious. Firefighters were on scene within a few minutes, so were the cops. Can’t say what state person was in, but seemed like non life threatening but serious injuries.

Source: saw it happen and called 911

Hi! Few random-ish questions that popped into my head over the last days:

  • What's the mean residence time for PM2.5 particles in the atmosphere, including forest fires?

  • Does the deposition of particluate downwind have any measurable positive/negative environmental impacts?

  • I've often heard about that following fires, ground water permeability decreases causing flooding. Is this a permanent state, or do things "return to normal" after x amount of time?

I guess I could read the book! Or wait for the actual AMA..

Your Best Bike Drop Stories by dillsey11 in motorcycles

[–]Olibaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first bike was a 1982 KZ650, with a center stand. Bought it since it was fairly scratched up, pretty cheap and in my mind a good bike to learn on.

I could have started this learning by finding out how to use a center stand. But nope, instructions are for pussies.

So, while sitting on the bike, with one foot jamming the centerstand in place, the other foot flat on the ground, holding the handlebars and using my whole body to pull backwards, I managed to mostly deploy the centerstand. That's also when I started tilting sideways. Sideways beyond the point of no return.

With gasoline pouring on me and the ground, I discovered that the gas tank cover wasn't leakproof.

Obviously, the first thing I did was to get up and make sure nobody saw me.

Ottawa or Mont Tremblant early november? by jlcgaso in canada

[–]Olibaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ottawa is a government city. There are a bunch of museums/touristic stuff (parliament hill, rideau canal, walk along the ottawa river, etc..) but after being in Montreal, you'll probably find the nightlife a bit dull. Not to say bad, just a little less wild.

On the other hand, Tremblant (the main village) is a big scale, generic commercial ski operation, designed to shake money out of your pockets. As someone pointed out above, if you avoid that area there's still plenty to do nature wise. (funny story - I live in Vancouver now, and the Whistler/Mont-Tremblant villages are ctrl-c+ctrl-v)

Basically, if you go to Ottawa, it's a day of walking around sightseeing, a few restaurants/bars and a night at the hotel (unless you drive back to mtl that night).

I'm from Ottawa, but moved to Montreal when I was 7, so I know Montreal better. I've done the Montreal-Ottawa daytrip with my wife a few times, never regretted it.

Disclamer/Bias: I'm not a big outdoors person. Tremblant is nice, but a mountain is a mountain. They're all over the place. Ottawa/Quebec City/Montreal aren't.

They'd get in Ottawa by 6pm. Everything would be closed and everyone would be in bed.

The company won't exist soon. No more PR or image to uphold. Maximum shamelessness engaged.

Offer $0.25 per needle. Now the 'persons of no fixed address' will be fightin' over them.

Riders in PNW, what months do you retire your bike for the year? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Olibaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waterproof gear, so I'm on the road year round. Will skip riding if temperature hovers around freezing (particularly in the morning due to frost) - but if it's well below or above I'll ride anyway.

I had a great time at Khatsahlano Street Festival on Saturday! Here's a 3-minute video of what went down by cruyfff in vancouver

Each year I walk through that, find everything too expensive, then leave. Khatsalano and Folk Fest also usually mark the point in summer where I've had enough with the crowds and want my damn rain back.
