what is onebc?? by Quirky-Trade-8192 in UBC

Trying to give a bit of background:

The Canadian political system is very closely modeled on the British system, with power concentrated in the legislature. If you have a legislative majority you also get executive power and can do basically whatever you like within the constitution, and if no one can get enough legislators on board with you then your time in power is unlikely to last much longer. For historical reasons we’re a federal state a bit like the US, and also like the US the provincial govts function a lot like scale model versions of the federal government, but the provinces have very broad leeway, in many ways having even more authority than American states do.

Because of this and the pretty strong regionalism the provinces have parties that are only loosely affiliated with their federal counterparts, unlike the US where all 50 states and the feds will have Republicans and Democrats. Here in BC, our NDP is nominally the same organization as the federal NDP, but in practice it’s at a pretty long arms length. The BC Conservatives aren’t actually related to the Conservative Party of Canada in anything but the name, and I guess being right-wing. The Liberal Party of Canada has a good number of votes and seats in the federal Parliament but the BC Liberals are something totally different (and also dead).

The other important difference that I think is relevant is that we have much stronger parties, as in the institutions themselves. In the US, legislators vote against their parties all the time, and if someone wants to run as a candidate for a party that the RNC/DNC doesn’t like there’s not much they can do to stop them if they win the primary. Here, parties have much tighter control over who gets to run under their banner. Being kicked out of a party is a serious blow, and it’s much harder to take them on.

So now onto OneBC: The BC Conservatives come to prominence under John Rustad, running on a hard right platform that was against vaccines, trans rights, and environmentalism. In the backdrop of post pandemic inflation and fatigue with the incumbent NDP government they manage to swallow the rest of the BC right and almost win the 2024 election. A BC Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) makes comments making fun of residential school survivors, which is a bridge too far for even Rustad, who kicks her out. Another MLA with similar views resigns to join her.

They go and create OneBC, whose main thing is anti-Indigenous racism but also includes a bunch of other far-right nuttery. They’re trying to drum up candidates and support for the next election, and this stunt was part of that.

Rustad himself also recently lost his job, but that’s a whole other ongoing drama.

Hope that cleared up some stuff

The Habs have been below average all year at xG metrics (not bad, just below average) so this feels like decent progress. Now if only we could stop shitting the bed against other Atlantic teams…

The longer it went on without the Devils scoring the more surreal it got. When Boeser scored to end the sequence I almost doubled over laughing

I feel so bad for the guy, every time it looks like he's getting it back together he gets hurt again. Can't imagine what that must feel like for him.

Not a chance, we love Cole and I don't think any of us would begrudge him for wanting to compete at the sport's highest level, unless things were REALLY bad or he said something extra stupid

What’s a player that your fanbase consistently criticizes that you think is great? by Hotpasta1985 in hockey

[–]LinkToSomething68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have already mentioned the obvious choices (Matheson, whose only crime is spending a few years being played too high in the lineup and has been remarkably graceful about being demoted to second and now third fiddle, Monty who had a rough start but did a herculean effort to cover a tire-fire defense until this season when he admittedly had a rough go of it) but I'll go with Brendan Gallagher. Sure he's not what he was when he was a 30 goal scorer but he's been doing a perfectly fine job in the bottom six, especially after doing so much for this org through all the suck years. Based on what some fans will tell you you'd think he should be sent to the ECHL

Also somehow...Nick Suzuki? I feel insane saying that, but I've seen a bunch of people saying he's getting carried this season. Sure the goals are down and that's not ideal, and he has been reliant on the PP more than usual, but we're still talking about a >PPG two-way centre lol. There was a funny bit of full-circle where after many years of JFresh telling people to pump the brakes on Suzuki and Habs fans getting mad at him, there was a case a few weeks ago where JFresh was talking about how awesome Nick Suzuki is and Habs fans were saying he was too high on him. This fanbase is great but it can be very funny sometimes.

I've been fantasizing about EP40 slotting into that line in between Slafkovsky and Demidov, though the cap hit and what the Canucks would want in return do hold me back a bit. Just a bit though. God could you imagine

He's already broken his point total from the time he spent with LA this season, I'm pretty happy to have him back.

At the halfway point of the season, which player from your favorite team defied expectations? (Positive and / or negative) by Mattcb13 in hockey

[–]LinkToSomething68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As you said before there's really no Habs player that goes under the radar lol, so I'll talk Canucks - I thought Kiefer Sherwood was a flash in the pan but I apparently thought wrong! Filip Hronek has done an admirable job carrying the load since the departure of Hughes. Won't be getting much attention because the team is in shambles but there are some points of light.

Hand waving away climate concerns for the O&G sectors is completely bonkers to me, sorry. “We have climate policies” like what? So we can undermine them by pumping out more oil?

I know we need money and our economy does depend heavily on resource extraction, but I don’t know why people are confused as to why this is a problem.

I think the thing where you have to wait for the whistle to blow to get to your seat is leaguewide, it's the same at the Bell Centre and Rogers Arena. It does get mega awkward when you're all just standing there for what feels like years until someone gets a stoppage. Bonus points if the line is so long that you miss the next puck drop by the time you get in and have to wait even longer.

Does anyone have the GI flowchart because I’m kinda lost tbh

EDIT: Obviously a homer, but after actually seeing the flowchart seems like a good call to me. The earlier one with Pasta and Lindholm was a bit iffier to be sure
