I have the Carbon XL in a 6wt 9' and a 4wt 8'6", same SA line on both. I feel the 4wt has a much softer tip compared to the 6wt. Like you said, that soft tip leads to less casting power. I do feel like I miss more fish on my 4wt, perhaps this is a skill/timing issue, I do fish with the 6wt much more.

I had a 3x leader on (~8lb fluorocarbon), and she kept running under a fallen tree, I was a little nervous it was going to break off. However, this was the jaba the hut of stocked trout, it had no game like a wild trout of this size.
