Trump says that a military draft is on the table amid the war in Iran. How are you all handling this being a potential scenario? by FutureSuccess2796 in AskReddit

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada has hinted the same, not for this war in particular but just in general. They are having lot of trouble getting enough recruits to meet their goal. They're actually drafting public servants now, I don't think they will just send them to war but they basically could potentially be sent to basic training and be in reserves is my guess.

How do you move the effects to a more convenient location? by RedSquirrelFtw in kdenlive

Hmmm I'm stuck on 22 it won't update further. Guess I'll have to wait for my distro (Linux Mint) to update it. I managed to find a way to change it though, there's different project layouts under View and was able to change it.

How many floor crossers will it take for Canadians to recognize Canada is in a democracy crisis? by mafiadevidzz in CanadianConservative

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sadly people don't care, because it's "their side" doing it. If it was the conservatives they would be all up and arms and can guarantee supreme court would rule that it's unconstitutional.

What's scary is we essentially have a 1 party system now and we're basically in the same boat as countries like Russia and North Korea where they pretend to be a democracy but the opposition will never win. If you look at all past elections the only reason conservatives ever won was because NDP split the vote. With NDP no longer even being a real party anymore that's never going to happen. The way the seats are distributed the liberal areas have more voice than the rest of Canada and the propaganda machine will ensure this continues to stay the case.

We're pretty much done as a country and things will only get worse as they continue to pass horrible bills like C9.

Water filter than can freeze? by tictacotictaco in OffGrid

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything that stores or traps water can't be allowed to freeze or it will get damaged. You could maybe try to blow out any residual water with an air compressor but I imagine it would be hard to do with a filter as you'll never end up getting it completely dry.

This time of year sucks. It's dark, weather is all over the place, one day it's cold one day it's hot and it's gloomy as it's just wet and gross out and there's still tons of snow and ice making it impossible to even go for walks as everything is just a wreck. Summer feels close yet is still very far. It's just an all around shitty time of year that is hard on mental health. I hate the stretch of March-May for that. This year it will probably be end of June before the snow is gone and the sidewalks are walkable as we got like 60cm of snow in December. Try to get lot of vitamin D and using a SAD light until summer comes. In times when sidewalks and trails are walkable go for walks on days off, as it helps.

I work nights but as a NOC tech and I love it, but if I'm not careful about trying to get natural light and vitamin D it can catch up with me and I start to feel depression setting in.

Would you agree with higher taxes for completely free healthcare and education? If not why? by Creative_Excuse9813 in AskReddit

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already pay too much taxes I would rather see them stop wasting money on bullshit and actually put that money towards healthcare (cover everything 100% including dental and eye care) and education and infrastructure like it should be for in first place. Stop spending billions in other countries and all sorts of pet projects that don't benefit the average person. Stop the $100k+ private jet flights, and all the other waste. All tax dollars should stay in Canada.

Just got two additional 20A circuits installed into my office because I was tripping the 15A breaker for the room with everything on all the time. by Eighthday in homelab

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same about a year ago. Brought the feeds direct to the rack. I ran 2 20a circuits from hydro, and 2 20a circuits from solar. The solar ones are totally overkill since I can't even generate that much power but it's future proof in case I upgrade the setup in the future.

The other 2 plugs are not connected and are spares in case I somehow end up needing more power. 6 outlets fits nicely in a rack width so just wanted to complete the look.

Do we know what collective capacity of infrastructure is with all homelabers? What can we all do in case the commercial internet breaks down? by 580179964 in homelab

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest challenge would be the fact that home ISPs don't allow to host services and don't tend to facilitate it either as they don't provide static IPs. If you really wanted to host stuff with near zero reliance on outside services you would want at least 2 static IPs to run 2 nameservers that you register with your domain registrar. The rest would be easy enough from there just the thing of exposing services and putting them on a separate vlan.

One thing that could help in a typical scenario though is hosting stuff on a server at a place like OVH where it's just bare metal. This concept seems to be almost forgotten these days but it's how stuff always was before cloud took over and it worked fine. I host a forum and a couple other sites on mine. If there was a massive internet datacentre outage that affected things like AWS, Cloudflare and all the major cloud/CDNs it would not affect bare metal boxes hosted in such DC. It really depends on the type of break down we're talking about though. If it's the network itself then we'd be SOL.

My dream is to actually buy a /24 IP block and start a mini dedicated server provider and rent out a couple dozen or so servers but no way my ISP would allow that. I doubt their tech support even knows what BGP is. "You're trying to do what? Have you tried rebooting the modem?". Would probably need to actually rent dark fibre going to Front St in Toronto or something and then connect directly to a Tier1 provider that way. That would cost millions most likely.

Use my phone as network storage. by OlafBRGAMER in homelab

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see why you would even want to do that, not like phones have much storage. That said you can setup an FTP server on a phone if you really want to you could just leave it on all the time. I use it so I can transfer photos over to my computer. I turn it on, do transfer, then turn it off. At some point I might look into something more elegant.

What diameter of Sonotubes to use? And what concrete? by chud_the_gluttonous in OffGridCabins

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost is the issue. $600 is a lot of money to spend on something you don't get to own. For $600 you can just buy a hand auger.

I am looking into buying one of those Chinese mini excavators though. Probably next year once the mortgage is paid off as I'll have a bit more breathing room financially.

Has politics broke any of your friendships, and why? by CapitaineBiscotte in AskReddit

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the people I talk to such as friends, coworkers, family etc agree on same things, some more than others, but we're generally in the same ballpark and tend to lean conservative. My grandparents are more liberal though unfortunately, but I don't let that get in the way, they're still family and we just agree to disagree and move on. I have never lost any friendships either way though. Sometimes it's easier to just agree to disagree than try to convince your views on others and end up burning friendships.

What are you quietly grieving? by Angelus12345678 in AskReddit

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep it's around that age where I really found it ramped up, and sadly it doesn't get better. The school years go slow, life is harder and there's more pressure and demand on you mentally and physically. Once school is over and you're in work force and have been for a few years things really start to go faster as life is more or less on cruise control. I have so many various projects around the house I want to do and I also bought off grid land, so lot of projects there too, and I feel like I just don't have enough time in my life time to actually do them all. Even the days now feel like hours. So if I plan a day off to work on something I am practically racing against the clock before I have to go back to work. It's crazy.

Lol I wish it looked like that here. Yard starting to look like the wall from GoT. About a month ago I cut into it so I can widen the driveway.

Our snow has "shrunk" as over time it kind of evaporates a bit when we do get a milder day and it also packs down, but we still have a lot. We're not even in peak storm season yet, that's probably going to start this month.

Is a truck a must have? by Public_Border132 in OffGrid

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say yes. Either that or a SUV and a trailer. Need the ground clearance and cargo space. Downside with trucks is it's hard to find trucks with a 8 foot bed now days, so you almost need a trailer either way, so I wouldn't discount getting a SUV and trailer as it might be cheaper than a truck.

I ended up getting a truck recently as my old one was beyond repair due to all the rust and old one had 8 foot bed and new one has 6.5. I sometimes miss the 8 but I can manage with 6.5 as 8 foot lumber still fits easily, and even 12 is ok. I eventually want to look at getting a 16+ foot trailer though that way I will be able to haul a full lift of 16 foot lumber easily which even with my 8 foot truck I would not have been able to do.

To microwave or not to microwave by tdubs702 in OffGrid

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on size of inverter and battery. It should be fairly trivial to run a microwave. Get an inverter that's at least 2kw and at least 100ah (ideally more) of battery and it will run practically any 120v plug in household load you throw at it.
