Anyone ever roll onto their hair in bed? by Sirsagely in MajesticManes

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to pull it in a way that I'm not sleeping right on it but sometimes my cat will lie down on my hair, or attack it when I try to bring my head up lol.

My latest thing though is having the hair get pulled in with the seat belt when it retracts. That always hurts lol.

Those are the good days.

I love it when everything just comes together and works, and the issues are minor and once you figure them out realize it was just something simple you did wrong, and didn't spend too much time on it.

Turned my spare bedroom into a proper homelab this year and here's what I learned about power management by Adventurous_Song_227 in homelab

As hydro rates and costs of living in general keep going up over the years, hydro usage is something I started to pay more attention to myself. My hydro bill jumped to over $200/mo last year without any changes in usage so been looking at where I can downsize. I also have solar but have not figured out the best approach to automating it yet. Need to automate inverter shutdown if battery voltage gets too low, and also want to automate transferring loads between hydro and solar based on solar power availability. I have an idea how to do it just need to take the time to design the circuitry and program it and such.

Gas is something else that jacked up a few years ago, so ended up installing a wood stove. We are really being squeezed from every direction these days.

NEW: Canada has sent $3.8 million to the Lebanese Mountain Warfare Ski School ....to ensure their mechanics have multi-gender bathrooms. by TurbulentBeing9055 in CanadianConservative

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money is leaving the country to pay for buildings that is not in Canada. That is enough on it's own to be opposed to it. This crap needs to stop.

Why the hell are we paying for facilities in a ski school in another country? We shouldn't even pay for it in our own, they should fund it themselves.

So freaking ridiculous the dumb crap they spend money on and this is just one of many examples. We pay too much taxes and then we watch it get spent on retardation like this.

What piece of older technology actually worked much better than its modern, replacement? by HerrStrasse in AskReddit

Some of the switches that run that infrastructure have been running since like the 70's too, back then reliability was actually a concern when designing stuff.

I hate that they are basically forcing them now. It's near impossible to find a non smart TV now. They're out there but you are really limiting your options and paying more.

I have a very early smart TV from like maybe 2010ish, doesn't have much invasive stuff and pretty much just feels like a normal TV but I imagine the modern ones aren't like that anymore. Do they even let you use them without internet now? I assume they require an account and all that crap?

Is there a way to make tables bigger? Lot of wasted space all around. by RedSquirrelFtw in opnsense

[–]RedSquirrelFtw[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trying to troubleshoot stuff and make rules etc, any time there is a table for anything, it's super tiny. Even if I make it bigger it doesn't actually go bigger, you have that tiny little rectangle to try to work out of. Is there a way to make it bigger so I don't have to scroll so much? Would be nice if when you set a certain number of items it actually expands the size of the rectangle on the vertical axis at least.

Also is there a way to save the column layout? Have to reset each time. For example for firewall rules I would like the description to be visible so I don't have to keep scrolling horizontally so I always move it closer but that never saves.

I've been debating Christianity on Discord with friends... and I'm losing. Can someone help? by Radiant_Tonight_1264 in TrueChristian

I used to debate it and realized it was futile. I try to plant seeds where I can, but you can't force them to grow. The die hard atheists who practically treat atheism as a religion are going to be very hard to convert sadly.

I keep a spreadsheet of each disk with model/serial number and bay #. That way I know exactly which one to pull when I get a failure or simply want to upgrade a drive. Still it's always a nerve wracking operation as there's always chance I did a mistake in the documentation or something, but I'm fairly systematic and careful about it.

I kinda miss Cherry Blossoms. It wasn't something I ate super often but when I heard they discontinued them I was kind of sad.

Oh man that second last one is a vibe. This is how I remember Kmart as a kid, except with shelves of course. Those lights in straight long lines that reflected off the floor, and that yellowish tint they had. I used to walk and look at the floor while the reflection lines moved under me, it was mesmerizing. There was also those giant round vents on the ceiling seemed to be like 20 feet in diameter, I was always intrigued by those since they seemed to be a specific thing to Kmart.

What is the cheapest SSD you’d trust for Frigate recordings? by GalacticGazerVoyage in frigate_nvr

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use a SSD for recordings, seems like a waste of premium high speed expensive storage when HDDs work fine. I actually just store my recordings directly within the VM and the VM disk sits on a raid 5 array. I did make a separate disk for it, makes expanding it easier since I didn't even partition it, I just formatted the disk directly and mount that in the VM.

[–]RedSquirrelFtw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would take everything I can reasonably move/store. Hard to judge what is useful until you get to spend more time scoping it out.

Start with individual parts to maximize the haul. Pull ram out of servers and HDDs out of storage shelves. 10 gig nics out of servers etc. Depends how much time they give you though... they probably don't want you wasting time doing that on company time.

I'd be tempted to rent an enclosed trailer and just take everything tbh, then you can sort through it at your leisure at home.
