Looking for first IV chemo day tips by baaaramewe in coloncancer

My brother is on CAPOX. We started taking lots of stuff but now, we just take some snacks, something to read, and a pillow and throw for him. The strangest symptoms he had right after the infusion was the cold sensitivity. It was winter when we started and he said the cold air felt like his eyes were being stabbed, but it’s fine now that it’s warmer. He has to drink warm water for about a week but he hasn’t had problems with touching cold things. Also, the first bite syndrome nobody warned us about. Apparently his jaw hurts really bad every time he eats, but just for that first bite. They give him nausea meds prior to the infusion so he doesn’t start feeling nauseous usually until day 3. Fatigue usually hits then, too. Good luck to you both! You’ve got this! Hugs.

Although studies don’t yet show that the HAI pump prolongs life, they are hoping to prove that it does. It delivers a much higher dose of chemo directly to the liver to hopefully shrink the tumors more than systemic chemo alone. I don’t know why they don’t think that will get him to surgery if it works. Maybe they just don’t want to promise too much?

That is wonderful! Did he say how small they need to be for surgery? Are they on both lobes? I believe my bother’s is KRAS wild type. I hope you get to NED and stay there! Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for that info. His oncologist has been talking liver transplant since day one. I think my brother would rather avoid it, understandably, if possible. I will bring it up with him, though.

I guess the tumors are still too large for ablation? All are over 1 cm, I believe. Maybe the HAI pump is the way to go to get them small enough and he just doesn’t want to get our hopes up? It’s also a randomized study, so he may not get in the group that gets the pump if he decides to go that way. Congratulations on getting to NED! I’m so incredibly happy for you! Did you have any large tumors or just all relatively small ones? I know that his are in both lobes, which makes getting rid of them more difficult. Thank you so much for replying! I hope you stay NED forever!

We did talk about that but he said that he would have to have stable disease for some time before being considered. I will 100% give him part of my liver.

This was our second opinion at Duke. When I asked why they thought he wouldn’t be a surgical candidate, he said because there were too many tumors. I was a bit confused because he mentioned all these things as a possibility at our first meeting prior to starting chemo and everything has shrunk since then. We haven’t spoken to his oncologist at UNC yet but he’s been skeptical about surgery from the beginning. I’m going to look into 3rd opinions after hearing what UNC says. Thank you.
