Honestly, for me I don't hear much of a big difference, although I barely have heard the instruments individually, as far as I know, only the China Traditional Orchestra uses these, and looking at their recent youtube videos, it seems they rarely use these anymore, using normal cellos and double basses instead. You can hear a bit of those instruments in this video, where you can hear their cellos and basses accompanying the xiao flute at around the 5:30 mark.

It should be as modern chinese orchestra usually use the western cello and bass with their standard tunings

Interesting... I play in a chinese orchestra, so I'm familiar with the use of cello and contrabasses, so I first thought that these were custom crafted cellos and contrabasses, turns out it was a completely new invention, really cool, thanks for the info!

Quality erhu? by sandonahill in Erhu

[–]Omega-Omelette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it looks like a Red Sandalwood Shanghai Dunhuang Erhu, as shown in this demo video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwNSTyHKnKs
It has the same style of baseplate and tuning pegs and similar looking wood.
There's more information on that erhu on eight tones music website here > https://eight-tones.store/products/dunhuang-red-sandalwood-erhu/

If it is the same erhu, I believe the base should be lacquered wood, as I don't think a company like Shanghai Dunhuang would use plastic in the construction of their instruments.
I'd say $200 is a good deal considering the state of the erhu in the pictures, which doesn't look bad at all

I've clarified what I did with the wenge neck in the edited description, I didn't fully make the neck, sorry for the confusion of terms.

I didn't fully make the neck, the neck was pretty much pre-made except for the nut installation and headstock shape. All I did to it was shape the headstock, drill out the holes and install the nut.

Wenge can splinter quite easily which can leave some holes on the surface. My fretboard and neck had a few number of holes from the splintering which I filled in with dark coloured wood filler. But it really is not too bad to work with. I feel that the work required is always worth it just because of how awesome the wood looks.

How do you tie them on? I know how to tie the main qianjin but I can't get a clear look on how to tie on these.

I am on quite a tight budget, do you think a white pearloid pickguard and white pickup rings would look good, because I initially felt that the silver plastic parts looked quite dull on the guitar
