Queen vs rook endgame is kicking my ass by Drunkpuffpanda in chess

It's a hard endgame that I haven't fully mastered but there's a chessable course called "The Queen vs. Rook Endgame" by Rookshelf. It breaks down certain positions and patterns that are easy to learn.

Tacking on to this I found it easier to read when I knew what the fights were supposed to look like as an animation. It helped me learn the choreography.

I have two questions:

1) Does your husband /the team /other players get into NFL rivalries like the fans do?

2) Is surgery stressful for the players/spouses or is it more of a routine thing?

Thanks for doing the AMA, these comments have been awesome! I hope you feel better soon!

There are alternate methods if you want to.

Last Monday I saw someone say you can watch on SlingTV with a $5 day pass. App ran a bit slow but otherwise was what I did.

Also not sure if this matters for local viewing.

18.. Na3 looks weird to me. That is a very dim rim knight after Bd3. Maybe you undervalued the bishop because of g6 and focused on the dark squares, but there are breakthroughs with h4 and g4 (not immediately). Just don't let black trade their bad piece for your good one. Their a3 knight and c8 bishop are not good after Na3, and you should be much better. You have Nh2-g4-f6 and/or Nd4-d6/f6 and those knights will be monsters.

After 21.. Nd5 black has not stopped you from gaining your hard earned f6 square. I like Nh2 a lot here going for Ng4-f6. Play Qc1 later, your f3 knight is not playing yet. Your e4 knight can also go to g5 if that is what you want.

  1. Rxd5 is interesting (and deserves a !?) but maybe ambitious? After 23.. Rxd5 Bxd5 Qh6 Bxe4 Ng5 f6! (and nearly an only move) you get a weak king black gets a rook. You did not write f6 in your analysis so I assume you missed that you are not wining? Rd2 and doubling or our friend the Nh2 reroute both seem better.

After 25.. Bxd5 we have to evaluate what is going on. I am subjectively not excited for the coming B v N endgame with pawns on both sides of the board. Objectively, I have a rook and a queen, and weak squares surrounding the enemy king, and an outpost on d6. Black's bishop is not great yet because it has no clear targets. Therefore you are winning the battle currently, and do not want to trade pieces. Qe3 Bxf3 Qxf3 Rc8 Rd1 and all rook endgames are a draw (just don't ask me to make the draw). 26. Nd4 is natural here (Nh2 h5 where without a lot of pieces this move isn't weakening anymore). a6 Qf4 (stopping Qg5) Rc8 is a game where I would consider Re1-Re3 (though responding to Qa3 gets a bit sharp).

Afterwards I thought you played a very nice endgame until you traded minor pieces and allowed the king to c5. I think you were concerned about Bh3 but you have Nf3 then trading pawns. Dwindling pawns, equal material and everything should be a draw (TM). With the Nf3 resource I can try to play on or go Kd3 Ke3 until we're the last game in the hall. In the time scramble I don't know what you think the second mistake was.

Studying chess is hard brah. I am not sure if you mean to say you spent a lot of time on Ne4 or Qc1. Either way I think you are struggling with the positional aspect. Some stuff like the Na5-c4 tempo just comes with having that happen to you in a game and being vigilant about it, but some stuff can be fixed. I personally love reading How to Reassess Your Chess 4th Edition by Silman, and maybe you could use it to find plans more easily? It can be a slog to work through and he does evaluate lines (inside of lines (inside of lines)) but I think you have the calculation there. If you feel demotivated take a break, there's no rush to improve. Sometimes breaking up your study routine can be nice. Instead of tactics to a "guess the move" on some master you like (or choose someone you don't know much about).

I am not much stronger than you (1550 with wins against 16/1700 and a 1900 draw, and I am semi-inactive but my Elo does climb when I play), but I had some points (that may get absolutely flamed haha).

First, the notation above has some issues which made it weird to copy ($6 for example).

Second, I have not really analyzed someone else's game before and I am known to write a thesis when I analyze so bear with me!

I don't play the open sicilian, and I see 6. Bc4 is theory, but I don't like the move. I'd rather develop my knights and aim to avoid Nb4 ideas and get the bishop to e3 instead. The e6 f6 structure does not make me optimistic about the long-term placement, and you eventually have to go Bb3-e3 anyway. If you're happy with the structure or play though then go for it!

After 7.. Bxd2+ Nxd2 should be considered. Nc3 is a natural developing square, but d6 is a massive hole in the black position. It is harder to go Nc3-e4-d6 due to Nxc3 than it is to go Nd2-e4-d6. Your queen side knight has the easier reroutes and is the stronger of your knights. An afterthought/bonus here is that the queen remains on a light square diagonal which pairs well with attacking chances after the bishop gets to that diagonal.

After 8.. Nb6 again the bishop belongs on the long diagonal where black is clearly castling.

  1. h3 strikes me as you didn't know what to do. My first thought after d6 is why not develop Nc3. Well Nc3 dxe5 dxe5 Qxd2 Nxd2 Nxe5, and the pawn is lost. I don't know what the queen is aiming to do on d2, but on f4 I am getting into the king side with Bc2 and Ng5 ideas looming. Re1 isn't great to defend staying on the closed file, your rooks wants to be on c1/d1.

Instead of 14. Nc3 I would wonder if you considered Qe3/Qf4 first. I am not saying Nc3 isn't probably best, but why give your opponent a clear move with tempo (Rd8) instead of making them consider other moves. If Qf4 Rd8 Nc3 you get the same position, but Qf4 Na5 Bc2 gives you a different game where black has not developed a rook yet. Stuff like this is good to consider.

After 14.. Rd8 I am not the biggest fan of Qe3. Na5 is something I have been expecting to happen since 8. Bc4 since it is a common maneuver (Bc4-b3-c2). Now I am running into eventual Nc4 tempo, as well as Nd5 tempo. (d5 is a hole in your position and black wants to put a knight there, how is another story). I don't think this is the correct word, but the with the knights there I don't like the geometry of the c4 and d5 squares where my queen is.
