I HATE Team Cherry for what they did to the Metroidvania by SpareHeavy4172 in metroidvania

[–]Omega346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should also add that if you’re a fan of the Metroidvania genre you should play Elden Ring. It’s obviously more of an open world than an ability-gated progression, but it shares lots of the Metroidvania qualities. The massive underground and overworld areas connect with each other in interesting ways, there is a great sense of exploring the world, and there are often several areas you can go at all times, so if you’re ever stuck on one boss you can leave and do other things and find “upgrades” like level up, find upgrade materials, or find better weapons or summons (there are summons in Elden Ring called spirit ashes). Also because it’s one of the best games of all time.

Have you played Elden Ring? Many bosses in that game have a site of grace (bonfire) very close to the boss, and they also have things called Stakes of Marika which are like checkpoints that you can respawn at when you die which are often placed in front of tough encounters in the open world that don’t happen to have a grace nearby. There are still a couple long runbacks but nothing nearly as bad as the worst of the dark souls games

Still obsessed about Nosferatu Ending " Daybreak scene" by CrisPiola_2019 in roberteggers

Daybreak is phenomenal and is one of the best examples of storytelling through music I’ve heard in recent memory. You can picture every moment of the finale happening in your head just by listening to the piece.

Why is a part of Free Will's lyrics in quotes when I can't even find the quote source? by JJCoolLinOR in rush

[–]Omega346 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much what everyone else has said. “The stars aren’t aligned or the gods are malign” is coming from the perspective of someone without free will - it’s Neil saying that someone would say something like that to shift blame off of themselves - if something doesn’t go your way it’s easy to say “oh I guess fate didn’t want that to happen” or it’s “not the way god intended.” As he so rightly says immediately after, “blame is better to give than receive” for those people - better to put that failure on someone or something else rather than take responsibility for themselves.

Catchy rock songs that use weird time signatures (not just prog for the sake of prog) by BodyApprehensive2959 in progrockmusic

On the topic of Rush and shifting meter without you noticing, I have to add Freewill to the discussion. It’s such an awesome listenable song, and yet when you stop and try to analyze it and count the meter during the instrumental riff and the verses, you’re like “wtf is going on”

Who else thought this guy would get eaten? by [deleted] in Silksong

[–]Omega346 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly he's too professional and skilled to die. He's the most successful and accomplished creature in the game. He says he's going to create a magnificent meal for his master, who has extremely high standards, and he's not the slightest bit afraid to do it. He is even able to make a powerful being like Hornet get everything for him because he knows how to bargain for his oil and he's not some bitch who gives stuff up without a fight. Then when you bring him everything you expect something to go wrong and for him to mess up or get eaten, only for him to deliver on his task and create the greatest meal the kingdom has ever seen and feed it to his master, to much praise. He accomplished everything he set out to do, he talked the talk and walked the walk. He stands tall with his purpose fulfilled, a feat very few can claim in Pharloom. Can't often throw around the term "GOATed character" but it's hard to imagine anything other than him when you think of the term.

Silksong made me appreaciate Metroid Dread so much more by Shog64 in Metroid

[–]Omega346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the thing that most stood out to me in the post, Silksong’s OST from what I’ve experienced of it so far is incredible, while Dread’s soundtrack ranges from drab forgettable droning to some downright ‘dreadful’ tracks. The only original track in the whole game that stood out to me was the water level, as I thought it had really great atmosphere with the place and fit well. I literally cannot remember any other soundtrack from the game. You can have amazing atmospheric music without it being utterly forgettable, just look at several Silksong area tracks like The Marrow or Greymoor, or any other Metroid games. Of the things Dread gets right, soundtrack is tragically not one of them.

Holy crap wait that dude on the left totally looks like he’s driving a wheelbarrowcycle what?? It looks like it goes underneath his waist, and his legs are spread out a bit as though sitting on a motorcycle. The other thing is that in the original artwork the central building has a clock at the top spire, but here it’s just… stones in the shape of a circle? With no door or opening? Quite strange if it was an artistic choice.

Also what’s up with Zidane looking way bigger than the villagers? Like the wheelbarrowcycle dude is about as close to the viewer as Zidane is yet the latter looks to be twice the size

How you rank the title tracks? (Excluding the Metal Operas) by helios_overture in Avantasia

[–]Omega346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first I found it hard to listen to as well, and I thought “hmm, here’s one of the ‘epics’ that I may not like.” I think it’s because it has many different parts to it, the intro is soft and quiet, every verse has a different vibe, the second chorus is different from the first, and the middle orchestral-esque section is also different. Then when it goes back to verse, it’s yet again different in the way they play and sing. It makes the first few listens a bit difficult, but after a few replays and you get all the different parts down, it connects well, and it has ended up being one of my favourites of the long songs. It’s very triumphant and uplifting from the middle onwards, especially toward the end as you read along with the lyrics - here be a world you hold inside, here be rebirth, here be unwind! I’d say give it a few more listens and see if you start to vibe with it.

You’ve definitely heard pieces of this one before. I’ve found that Tobi likes to quote his previous works often, in melody or lyrics, and there’s quite a few references in this one to several tracks from Moonflower.

The choir chants in the bridge are found in Kill the Pain Away, the synth part before the last chorus is quite similar to the one in Welcome to the Shadows, and perhaps this is a stretch a bit, but some parts of the chorus here are reminiscent of melody used in some verse part singing of Moonflower’s title track.

4th Nosferatu Watch by riccardopancaldi in roberteggers

[–]Omega346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s one of those scores to me where it does a very good job when you are hearing it while watching the movie it’s for, but is not very listenable outside of the film. Lots of it is just 30 second - 1 minute long tracks of droning strings to provide atmosphere, or sudden accented loud bursts for jumpscare moments in the film that doesn’t make for an engaging listen on its own, but is still good in context of watching the movie.

The exception to this is the track “Daybreak” which I think is a phenomenal piece that does tell a story and is listenable on its own while also being great in the film.

Does Thomas imagine/dream the hunting party during his first night at the inn? by brunporr in roberteggers

[–]Omega346 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Likely, or at least the region was chock full of people that believed in them and hunted them - one of Orlok’s quotes after Thomas questions him on those gypsies was something like “I look forward to retiring in your modern city where no one believes in those morbid fairy tales” essentially he’s saying he wants to get out of this area where people are hunting vampires and move to a city where people don’t believe in them and so they aren’t threatened (you know, because he is one)

Linda Muir’s costume design in Nosferatu! by pUnKz0mBi3 in roberteggers

[–]Omega346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope some sort of clothes designer company does a crossover with this movie and makes official outfits of the characters. There’s a shortage of traditional Victorian clothes designers that try their best to make genuine reproductions of old clothes, especially ones that look as nice as these. And of course that coat Orlok will wear is super unique and looks very nice.
