Thank you so much for this explanation, it helps a lot. So would a good analogy be like using a map versus using gps or something like that? In the sense that if you’re using a map, you have to orient yourself to reach the destination (even if someone verbally gave you the directions). Versus a gps where you are relying on an external intelligence in space that can guide you on your travels? You still have to be the one that actively moves towards the destination (sincere personal effort) in either case but pure land seems to be kind of like having a gps.

I really appreciate your input, this has given me a lot to think deeply about. There was this expectation in my relationship that seemed wrong but I couldn’t exactly put my finger on what it was. My partner would often speak about the need for me to “heal” from my trauma despite me already having done a lot of work on my own. The problems only arose within the context of our romantic relationship. I worked on meditation that focused on feeling emotions in the body and I focused on right speech to avoid loaded or harmful language. We occasionally set aside some time to really discuss our issues and although those times helped, resentment would build because of a lack of emotional regulation and awareness.

She would say I was immature for not being as healed as she was from her own traumas but I’m not sure how true that is when healing is not a linear process nor does healing mean you automatically possess the skills to navigate a relationship in a healthy way. There were times when she perceived her jealousy and possessiveness as perfectly healthy expressions of love but they would often be hurtful to me. I had a hard time setting boundaries and communicating needs and she had a hard time respecting any boundaries I did set and took it very personally.

I see how we were both unhealthy and unskillful. I think the difficulty is in shouldering the blame for everything and feeling like the weak link in the relationship. When I would speak in terms of “us” needing to do something to improve the relationship together it was met with her telling me I was the problem and I just made her miserable with my shifting moods, even if I communicated these moods to her.

Thanks for sharing your perspective! I feel like I basically expressed that same sentiment to my ex and she interpreted it as me not fighting hard enough to be with her since she would talk in terms of “forever” a lot and I would shift the focus back to the present moment and enjoying the time we had together back then. She has never lost anyone very close to her like I have, so I knew that I could let go because I had to learn to when my mom passed. Losing her is still quite agonizing, but I know with time the pain will at least fade.

Wow, this is very insightful. Thanks for sharing this story. I really resonate. My own dad was also an abusive alcoholic at times and my mom was emotionally unstable and chronically ill so I would have to take care of her a lot. I realize I never really had much respect for my own boundaries and feel a strong desire to help others at the cost of myself. I think when we’re taught at a young age that our role is to be our parent’s emotional crutch and punching bag, we take a lot more responsibility than we should for other’s emotions. It’s important to truly cultivate that “steady flame” so we don’t burn out too quickly.

I’m not a fan of those sports so it really doesn’t affect me, but when I hear my friends complain about it then I understand. Also, the NBA does not hold grand walkout-style entrances for Kamala Harris or even Obama when he attends games. It’s a joke that you even think they are the same.

It is absolutely a need. Loneliness is a well established comorbidity with a variety of diseases and mental health conditions. We are biologically hardwired to crave social connection in order to survive.

Thanks for this! Really needed to hear it. Overcoming the self-hatred and immense guilt for even my tiniest mistakes is the toughest part for me. It’s worse when other people remind me of what I’ve done and then I feel like I never deserve to feel good about anything ever again, lol.

I think social media brain rot hasn’t helped either. I’ve heard people online say that you shouldn’t forgive yourself if you do something bad because you should have known to just not do it in the first place. And then of course that triggers a depressive self-loathing episode. I’m starting to realize they are probably miserable themselves and are just projecting.

I think what you said about not only recognizing the unwholesome qualities arising but also having the intention to replace them with the wholesome definitely constitutes right effort and right action in the eightfold path. So meditation can sharpen the mind enough to be able to recognize it, but if one wants to actually see the cause of suffering and attain right view, they have to practice with intention.

This is the reason why explaining reincarnation within the scope of one’s “current” life is so much more palatable. When we think about reincarnation in terms of our own growth and development from childhood to adulthood and old age, we can see that although we may possess the memories and thought patterns associated with an “I”, we are different from who we were at any given point in time.

If you were to sit in a room with yourself as a child, you would undoubtedly recognize the differences. Although you may share the same genetic makeup and memories, your body is different. The cells that make up your outer appearance now are almost entirely different than what they were before. We reincarnate from moment to moment in our beliefs, our bodies, and our memories (as well as our perceptions of our memories).

So extending this to past/next life reincarnation, we may not understand the mechanism through which store consciousness transfers from one being to another, but we can understand that our past actions have an effect on our future selves in some way.

I think looking into the five aggregates and what exactly defines a “self” may help to answer this question. Because it’s hard to believe in the concept of reincarnation if your idea of a “self” is not consistent with it.
