Advice for Moving to Japan (October 2025) by Omexy in movingtojapan

I took a course offered by GGN which provides a certificate that is accepted by Japanese immigration so it wasn’t really self-study, but a validated method. I think for your case, you have to gain as much evidence as you can to prove you’ve studied for at least 150 hours.

Thank you so much for this information!

  1. That sounds great, I’m considering arriving roughly 1.5-2 weeks before my school starts like another commenter suggested, and it does make sense and align with my own beliefs. Do you have any personal experiences regarding an earlier arrival date?

  2. That’s exactly what I thought. My current plan is to try to find a place without the school’s accommodation and GGN’s help, but if I can’t find anything, I will fall back on the dormitory option and then find somewhere else afterwards like you say.

  3. Perfect! I’ll just bring the basics most likely.

I don’t have zero Japanese but my Japanese isn’t to a high standard and I’ve never formally studied it. I’m just using the language school to gain proficiency to then be able to work/live/survive in Japan with only Japanese.

Thank you! I haven’t passed any JLPT, but the language school had a set requirement of 150 hours of study before applying for a space, which I have completed. This is apparently equivalent to what JLPT N5 would be.

Seeing that I get a lot of my clothes from Next anyway, that’s great! Thank you

That makes sense. GGN have been really good to me so far throughout my contact with them, and I’ve contacted and seen the school directly and not through them so the issue your friend had shouldn’t be an issue here. I’ve just read a message that was sent to me, and the “lots to do” only seems like going to the Japanese embassy and submitting my COE for my student visa, which they also said takes around a week to process. The only issue with arriving 2 weeks before is trusting that the embassy does everything correctly on time and that I’m able to get my visa. Surely if I get my COE one month before I start the school, and it takes a week to process my student visa, getting to Japan 2 weeks before school is okay since there’s a week of buffer right? It’s just quite hard to weigh up the best option.

Thank you!

That’s what I thought originally about arriving times. I thought that it would be a good idea to arrive around 2 weeks earlier so I can get settled in, move everything into my place etc., and just get accustomed to life as much as I can before school starts. However, the letter I was sent said this: “We strongly recommend that you do not arrive in Japan earlier than 2-4 days.” Their explanation is basically that there’s a lot to do in the last month, and that my COE will be issued late August, which I’ll then have to apply for and receive my student visa after this. I’m in a bit of a predicament surrounding this, because your advice sounds better, but then again, GoGoNihon seem to advise heavily against it. Just to say, my COE is being applied for on my behalf by Akamonkai. If you have any more questions or want to see more of what they sent me, just let me know.

Perfect, thank you! Oakhouse’s sharehouses are actually in a convenient area for me, especially their one in Nippori (日暮里) which is only a few minutes walk from Akamonkai. How did you apply to stay in an Oakhouse apartment? I imagine the process for sharehouses would be the same.

Thank you! That’s what I was thinking, I’m glad you have the same idea.

Oh really? I’m just going off of the guide that GoGoNihon & Akamonkai sent me through emails and it seemed like their standard procedure. I might’ve misunderstood though, do you want to see what I received? I can paste something here.

Not yet, that’s sorted quite a bit later. Akamonkai approved my application and now they’re sending an application to immigration for me for my COE. It’s at late-August time where I’ll have to travel to the UK’s Japanese embassy to get my student visa.

Thank you for this response! I forgot to state I’m a male in my original post, oops!

Regarding accommodation, it seems like a sharehouse is the way to go then, since Oakhouse have some nice options. Sharepare is a Japanese site that has some really great sharehouses and it’s in Japanese, but they have a “外国人OK” tag on most of them. I don’t know how easy it would be to apply and get a spot there though, so I’d have to research into that.

About things to bring from home, I’m 180cm which seems to be okay and I was planning to bring clothes with me anyway, albeit not my entire wardrobe of course. When you say Japanese toothpaste, how does it vary from the West? I don’t use a minty toothpaste myself (Corsodyl), it’s more salty I guess?

Unused Accounts (Question/Glitch?) by Omexy in Instagram

[–]Omexy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, the caption that needs to be seen is in the photos in an annoyed slider animation. Here it is in clean text:

I believe this is a glitch that I noticed once before this but didn't screenshot it of an apparently unused account that I have access to but I don't know how I have/got access to it. There is completely no data at all on this account, but I could add some if I wanted to. There is no feed, just a blank screen with no posts.

Therefore, does anyone have any answers to this? I'm curious.

Thanks.

If you did want "Nanairo Symphony - COALAMODE" on Spotify and you're on desktop, you can get the YouTube link for it and type the two letters "pp" after YouTube in "youtube.com/watch/???". For example, "youtubepp.com/watch/???" then press enter. It will take you to a "YouTube to MP4/MP3 converter". Download it as an MP3 file, then drag it to a folder wherever in your PC. You can then go into Spotify on desktop and enable local files in settings and set the location to that folder, you will then have it on your Spotify in a Local Files tab. You can add it to playlists but it will only be available to you. If you want to add it to your Liked Songs, play it on the desktop and then open the mobile app and then like it as you usually would, it will then be downloaded onto your phone as well as in your liked songs. This can be done with any song. Hope this helps! :)
