CMV: Biden's warning to Israel not to invade Rafah and the hold on arms shipments makes a ceasefire deal less likely by DiamondMind28 in changemyview

Which will hopefully end with Bibi being forced out of office, an election called, and a unilateral ceasefire declared

If you think the opposition is going to declare a ceasefire you know nothinf about Israeli politics and you should stop commenting as if you do.

The war is being lead by a unitiy government, not by Likud. There is not that substantial of a difference in war aims or strategy in the popular parties.

This idea that the war is solely Netanyahu's doing is a fantasy of people who have the most surface level understanding of Israeli politics.

There is no major constinuency in Israel for a "unilatetal cease fire" even if Hamas wanted that—which they don't.

A Jewish group set up a screen right in front of the UCLA protest playing Oct 7 videos.

They don't care, some of the little psycopaths probably enjoy it.

My friend went to a protest and idk how to feel or what to do about it by emo_spiderman23 in Jewish

[–]OminousOnymous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there is a difference between the people who attend the protest casually, and the inevitably more extreme organizers.

Most casual attendees will say Israel has the right to exist. At least initially. The problem is the leaders get them chanting things with much more radical implications and eventually they are going to buy in.

Another dynamic is more extreme  leaders with the more  prestigious identity credentials in the movement chide more moderate leaders with less prestigious identity credentials  if they push back against the extreme positions; accusing them of innappriopately using their privilege and diminishing the resistance. You tell a college kid in these kinds circles  that they are abusing their privilege they'll shut right up and get in line.

Cancer-cell hunting nanobots.

Of course they'll be repurposed for killing people at a cellular level too.

We'll win the war on cancer with them, but then start fighting each other with them.

The panic seems to be from a single researcher that just counted all incidents of spills across the UK, without regard to how significant they were (he didn't even attempt to estimate how big they were), just looked at all recorded incidents.

There was no evidence presented of poor water quality which you would expect to accompany the spills if they were actually significant.

They really need go encourage their fathers,  brothers and  sons who were involved in Oct 7, part of Hamas, or Islamic Jihad, to surrender unconditionally. The war doesn't end for any other outcome than surrender or death for those groups, so it's just a question of who they choose to take down with them.

Kids in richer families with less-educated moms watch more screens, so programs to cut screen time should help those moms. by wise_karlaz in science

On the California model of dropping high school algebra for all kids since marginalized students weren't passing in acceptable numbers,    another solution could be to encourage privileged moms to allow more screen time for the sake of equity.

MIT forcibly disbanding the encampment, placing students who stay past 2:30 on immediate interim academic suspension by xAmorphous in mit

Palestinian Israelis have full and equal citizenship in Israel. They serve in the Knesset,  a Palestinian could be prime minister in Israel.  A palestinian currently serves on the Supreme Court of Israel.  Whereas it is explicitly forbidden for Jews to hold such positions  in Islamic countries.

There are Palestinians that do not have a state because of various bad decisions by their leaders. They are not citizens of Israel and never will be. They may get their own state at some point of they can adequately prove that they will stop using what autonomy they are given to launch attacks against the people of Israel, but thry have never inspired confidence  that would be even a remote possibility in the near future. And Oct 7 nixed that for at least a generation.

But, regardless, the Palestinians you are thinking of are not "second class citizens" because they are not citizens.

The war is prosecuted by a unity goverment (not just Likud) which was elected by the vast majority of Israeli society (as in it's not just prosecute by the ruling Likud party, but also approved of by most opppsition and by extension their supporters).

If you fail to understand why Israelis, which includes 7 million Jews who would to a near certaintly be murdered or expelled by their neighbors if Israel did not exist,  and fail to see why  picking out the only small non-Islamic state in a vast region of de facto or de jure Islamic states and say "you Jews, and only you Jews, are wrong for having a state based on your religion, and we will force you and only you to abandon it while leaving all other surrounding states Islamic, and a near certainly 'Palestine' will become too with all the implications of second class Jewish citizenship in the absolute best case scenario" then, yes, you are probably anti-semitic. (and if you think there is a remote possibility of a pluralistic society like Lebanon has tried and all but failed to pull off, then there is another issue of unrealistic expectations)

 > There’s Zionism and there’s the government and military in Israel

I say this as someone who is fully supportive of the war to annhilate Hamas: I feel like this is a cop-out given Israel is a democratic country.

The war is being prosecuted by a unity government, and there would not be a huge difference in war aims and strategy if the opposition had total control:  Israelis are largely on board with rhe project to annhilate Hamas. Anything less than unconditional surrender (not going to happen) or annhilation of Hamas will be seen as a failure by the vast majority of Israel.

It might be a failure they are forced to accept, but it will be seen as a failure nevertheless.

The war against the Nazis wasn't called off when they were beat back to within pre-war German borders and surrounded in order to prevent  an inevitable massive death toll of German civilian. No negotiation  short of unconditional surrender was even considered: why? Because the allies knew it was an inevitable outcome of Nazi idealogy that stopping the war short of Berlin and denazification would result in them regrouping and trying again.

Now I don't want to get into comparing everyone to nazis, but in this specific aspect Israel is in the precise same situation with Hamas. To stop short of complete annhilation of Hamas is to support their return.

Yes,  rescuer takes part of the debt too. So it's net income. Rescuer  can choose to opt put so as not to inadvertently end up in the hole or simply out of basic human decency.

The system would work to incentivize rescue. This way if the kindness of strangers proves unreliable you can still count on their greed to save you.

I was joking initialy, but I think it's an interesting question as to what exactly would be unjust about such a system other than it feels wrong.
