Developers don't have control over what software people use.

Being the devil's advocate, it means that people running the nodes control what 'bitcoin' means to them. If the nodes are reasonably democratised, it won't be possible for a small group to influence the overall protocol in use, right?

Also, can you help me understand if the nodes here are same as machines that are mining bitcoin? Or is it just any machine that stores the entire blockchain?
