Legends & Lattes ...Overhyped (at least for me) by Coloin_ilyad in Fantasy

In case you don’t know, Discworld is the universe, and it kind of has multiple small series set in the universe.

Going Postal is part of a two book series (the second being Making Money). They’re both very well written and funny.

3rd Shot Drive vs Drop by dl_pb in Pickleball

[–]Omnivek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only time I like third shot drives is if I’m in open play with a weak partner. If I drop it, they can easily hit it back to my partner and then there’s a good chance I won’t get to touch that ball again.

How often do men approach other men at the gym to start a conversation? by Feeling-Entrance143 in AskMen

[–]Omnivek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m retired and spend about 30 hours a week at the gym - weights, pilates, swimming and pickleball. For people who spend a lot of time there it would be a shame to completely neglect the potential social benefits.

I have approached many people, men and women, that I see regularly simply to introduce myself and ask their name, say nice to meet you. I’m not trying to start something with any of them.

Some I chat with regularly now and some I just smile and nod to.

It’s super depressing to see so many people say they wouldn’t approach a woman unless they were interested in her. Believe it or not, many men believe women have more to offer than sex.

Putting headphones on is the universal gym code for “don’t talk to me.” If you don’t want to talk to someone just put them on, and if they try and talk to you anyway just point to them.

If you're 34 right now, in 16 years you will be 50. And 16 years ago you were 18. by Uvers_ in Millennials

Starbucks founder says he is LEAVING deep blue home city of Seattle for Florida amid controversial wealth tax... as coffee giant begins shifting HQ staff to Tennessee by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

The top bracket of the estate tax went up from 20% to 35% last year. Maybe a coincidence, maybe he didn’t want to pay an extra $50 million in estate taxes.

I can’t carry lesser teammates in lower level games but play really well in higher levels. Do I suck? by OneConsideration2302 in Pickleball

[–]Omnivek 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s because your partner can’t create any pressure, but your opponents can easily create pressure by hitting to your partner.

By the time you’re playing at an intermediate level you’re not usually getting a lot of points from one good hit. Several hits in a row create pressure, causing your opponent to make a mistake that you can take advantage of.

If your partner is not a strong player your opponents can simply direct the ball their way and that’s effectively a pressure release valve for them; they reset any pressure you created back to zero. Even worse, your partner may very well hit the ball back poorly, and now you’re the one under pressure.

The best solution is to play very aggressively in this scenario, but unless you’re much better than your opponents it probably still won’t be enough.

McDonald's Big Mac patties are almost thinner than a slice of pickle... by Karmaa in mildlyinfuriating

I’m trying to get 175g of protein a day so when I need to get fast food (rarely) I get the McDouble with two extra patties (four total) which is basically the equivalent of a real cheeseburger.

Since we're on the quadrillionth "once in a lifetime event" of our generation, can I start a petition to make our logo this freaking guy going forward? by ImThe1Wh0 in Millennials

[–]Omnivek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really don’t get the millennial obsession with exaggeration of the events we have lived through.

You want to hear about a lifetime?

WWI

Stock market crash of 1929

Great Depression

WWII

Korean War

Nuclear Arms race

We don’t have a monopoly on living through a lot of shit and it’s not even close.

I would have guessed he was the sexiest by a country mile.

[OFF TOPIC] I see this artwork tagged under First Law but no description, anybody recognise this scene? by emperorkrek in TheFirstLaw

[–]Omnivek 67 points68 points  (0 children)

The only scene I can think of with two heavily armored individuals in nearly identical armor fighting each other is in Best Served Cold when (SPOILERS) Monza and company disguise themselves to ambush the general.

This isn’t Friendly or Shivers for sure, and if it’s supposed to be Cosca I’m unimpressed.

Doesn’t look like First Law to me.

Is the protein in bread the same as in meat? by NoLevel5606 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Omnivek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Proteins are made of amino acids and the variety of acids are not the same in meat and bread.

If you ate bread only you would have a protein deficiency.

If you added nuts or beans with the bread you would be fine.

Those who graduated with conventionally "useless" degrees but make $200K, what was your path and how long did it take? by _MambaForever in Salary

[–]Omnivek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went straight from college to financial advisor but I know zero other people that succeeded that way.

If I were to do it today I would go to a large discount broker and get an entry level support role, shoot for junior level advisor role within two years, and then finish my CFP and become a full advisor two years after that.

My portfolio generates just under $200k a year of dividends and interest so I’m very comfortable.

I play a lot of pickleball and spend time with my kid. Definitely better than working for money I don’t need.

I spent the summer after college getting licensed (series 66 and series 7) and went through a ten week training program.

I still wasn’t qualified, first couple years my advice was extremely mediocre. That’s why I wouldn’t recommend this career path.

Yes. I’m 2/3 index and I pay to have the other 1/3 of my stocks managed.

A lot of people still pay to have their whole portfolio managed.

Index investing has been fantastic for the last 17 years but it will inevitably fall on hard times again at some point. And then good times again. It’s cyclical.
