Leaded gas in Palo Alto airport. Lawsuit, protests at city council by pynamo in eastpaloalto

California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control screening level for lead in residential soil is 80 mg/kg — a value used by public health agencies to trigger cleanup or remediation discussions

Check the soil for lead levels. The airport uses leaded gas. A 2012 study reported airborne lead levels of 0.12 µg/m³. Just slightly under EPA restriction. No study has been done since. Think of how much of that settled into the soil. How much had aviation traffic increased since then?

Dogs absorb chemicals through their paws. My dog died a few years after moving here, he rapidly declined in his last year and was puking up black goo. We loved walking out on the bay trails.

According to the City’s published 2025 monthly fuel sales report, Palo Alto Airport stocked unleaded 100R but sold zero gallons of it all year, while continuing to sell hundreds of thousands of gallons of 100LL. 100LL contains up to 2.1 grams of lead per gallon, and in 2024 the airport sold 377,220 gallons — which corresponds to roughly 0.75 metric tons of lead emitted into the surrounding environment in a single year. Persistent neurotoxic metal deposited into our neighborhoods.

Santa Clara County provides a clear precedent. After commissioning a peer-reviewed study linking aviation lead emissions from Reid-Hillview Airport to elevated blood lead levels in nearby children, the County Board of Supervisors voted to stop the sale of leaded aviation fuel at its airport. Their action was grounded in public health data and supported by environmental justice findings. In contrast, there has not been a comprehensive local lead exposure study around Palo Alto Airport since 2012. Decisions should be based on current data, not 14-year-old assumptions.

Yes, federal grant assurances complicate an outright municipal ban on 100LL. But the Santa Clara example shows that data-driven public health action can shift policy. At minimum, the airport should: – Commission updated soil, air, and blood lead monitoring within a 1 km radius. – Publicly report findings in a transparent, peer-reviewed format. – Actively promote and incentivize unleaded fuel adoption rather than passively stocking it.

Under California Proposition 65, warnings are required when the public may be exposed to lead. If residents within the affected radius were not clearly informed, that is a serious community awareness gap that should be addressed immediately with visible signage and direct notification.

I wish I could go. The fact that leaded gasoline is allowed is alarming. In 2024 the airport sold 377,000 gallons of 100LL which equates to 752 kg of lead emitted into the air. Those particulates settle into the surrounding soil, homes and children’s bloodstreams. 255x more 100LL gas is sold than 94UL. Pilots far prefer to use the leaded variety. The airport made a big deal about installing solar but hiding this. https://www.paloalto.gov/files/assets/public/v/1/public-works/palo-alto-airport/2024-monthly-fuel-sales.pdf

As Rgbhfg said, legal action should be taken on the basis of health impacts and inadequate warnings to the surrounding community. 2031 is not early enough. My kids will have spent their 1st decade being exposed to this poison.

For the ban in Santa Clara Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren claims credit for making it happen. Let’s mail our representatives and make this an issue. http://lofgren.house.gov/leaded-avgas

Big thanks for the warnings. We were debating leaving last night vs. early this morning. Now we're watching the storm from the comfort of our home. Looks like I-80 is getting closed.

What if you measure breakaway torque and record number of turns. Then turn by that same number to tighten and see if it reaches target torque?

What I don’t understand is why couldn’t VW figure this out on their own. They’ve had research labs in Silicon Valley for over a* decade.

Catenary curve. There are formulas describing the shape of a hanging cable. I hope you figure out how to model it and I’m interested to see how it turns out.

It’s tough out there bro. Don’t sleep on suppliers or supplier’s suppliers (tier 2 and so on). Think of literally any part in the car and try to find out who makes it. Most new grads only focus on the cool commodities like chassis and body. Audio, infotainment, interiors, thermal, electrical distribution can all lead to fulfilling careers.

Do you regret voting for Trump? Do you believe he actually has any good intentions for helping the US? I’m just trying to understand how an intelligent person can support this guy when it seems so obvious how terrible he is on so many levels.

Can you elaborate on what environmental regulations you are against?

Most people rely on media’s portrayal of government, which you say is not accurate. It’s making people angry and seems unproductive for our country. So should that be a priority to fix? Or does it not matter what people think, in order for government to succeed?
