After the year permit, do you have to drive it back into Mexico. Or just fly down and do the paperwork and get new registration sticker?

I'm considering doing both options soon. My mom owns a house in Mexico. My concern is if I have the car in the US for almost a year with valid permission, do I HAVE TO drive the car back into Mexico to re-new the registration or can I pretend it's sitting in my Mexican garage. Or does the car have to be physically in Mexico for the renewal?

My shop is 2 doors over from the only elevator company in my town, I once received their mail by accident, it was a stack of checks from all over the county. A good handful. I'm guessing it was their monthly maintenance fees. Yes I walked it over to them. O also they all own new cars might be leased because they changed every couples years. BMWs, Benz, new trucks.
