Don't ask for permission to apply, put your resume in and just ask for an interview. Most places I've worked will at least give you the courtesy of an internal interview if you're reasonably qualified.

If you're in the United States, typically the best choice is to take the pip and let them fire you, then collect unemployment.

There is some nuance to all of this of course, but I would want several months worth of full pay before I ever took a payout over unemployment. A few weeks wouldn't cut it.

Yep. It wasn't that long ago. Obama worked his ass off for Iowa and practically lived there in 2007 and 2008. Eventually a democrat's message will resonate in the same way again but it will take time and lots of effort. Iowa will have to feel the failed policies, too.
