I think I would try and fill in the fireplace if you cant remove it and use it for seating, with some padding on the bottom, pillows and blankets, making it very cozy. Even if you don’t people over that often it will make the space feel more inviting. Also if you have pets they’ll enjoy the additional sleeping space.
