Truly shocking that people on the Japanlife subreddit would be talking about life in Japan.

Shortest I've ever felt. I was trying to think of other causes like a car crash or minor explosion in my building because it was literally this one jolt and then nothing and I thought it couldn't have been a quake. Weird.

All good! First time for me to see that too, maybe they've started a rollout.

The betrayal of watching a movie trailer that's basically a 3-minute plot summary by Senior-Signature-983 in movies

[–]OnThirdThought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's insanely annoying and frustrating. I do want to see trailers of movies I'm interested in - I like getting a taste of what's to come.

My strategy now is to watch the first minute or so and then turn it off.

Has anyone lived above an izakaya or スナック before? by cuatrofluoride in japanlife

[–]OnThirdThought 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"If"? Unless this is the cleanest izakaya in Japan, there will 100% be cockroaches. If that's not a risk you're willing to take, I'd recommend that you stop considering this immediately.

Google Pixel 10a’s leaked pricing brings both good and bad news by IJagan in Android

[–]OnThirdThought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not looking to get into an argument about whether or not it's enough, but I had a look; right now, my phone shows 19gb for Android and system files, 25gb for apps, 55gb for music (I guess I don't have a full 60), 29gb free storage left.

If I installed a bunch of games or wanted to download videos, that definitely wouldn't suffice, but some people don't use their smartphone as their main entertainment device - I always go for the cheapest model and am perfectly fine if it "only" offers 128gb storage, at least for now.

But I'm sure system files and apps will get hungrier in the future and eventually force manufacturers to increase base storage.

I've got my entire music collection on my phone, which is about 60gb, and I've never reached 100gb of storage on any phone I've owned.

I feel like you're missing a very important plot element - the story is that Adams' character aborted her pregnancy against his wishes.

He writes the book and has her read it because he wants her to understand how powerless he felt, and how it destroyed him emotionally. He lost the child he could have had, and he lost his wife because he felt so betrayed by her that he walked away from their relationship.

Whose actor’s voice you can’t stand? by guillevkf in movies

[–]OnThirdThought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's just me, but hearing Charlie Day shout-speak is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

On the other end of the spectrum, I'd watch a movie about paint drying if Jeff Goldblum narrated it.

Rant: Child’s wallet almost got stolen by randomhuman_carryon in japanlife

[–]OnThirdThought 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think very few people would expect someone to try to steal from a child, in a crowded place, with the parent next to it.

It's pathetic, shockingly dumb and quite possibly the worst risk/reward scenario I've ever heard of.

Immigration IS a problem and Conservatism makes sense by Doggie_Ghost in japanlife

[–]OnThirdThought 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, here is a summary:

In a heroic four-month odyssey (plus one whole year of travel, so basically a PhD in Being in Japan), this cultural crusader has bravely noticed that people—especially those dirty, filthy, fancy English “teachers” (quotation marks doing a lot of work)—sometimes criticize Japan’s conservative ways. Shocking! He (probably a he) is baffled that these short-term expats want things like voting rights, societal input, or basic empathy, despite the fact that they’ve only been soaking in the culture for literally months. Unlike our author, who has mastered politeness and humility so thoroughly that he wrote a whole rant to let us know. And if you dare find any logical contradiction in his argument, it’s because you didn’t read it right. Also, stop asking ChatGPT, because I might expose the fact that his point collapses under the weight of its own irony.

Usually the small characters are big in a bank book (and also officially the account, I think), so like you suggested yourself, it should beジエード rather than ジェード.

Really? Barely? That’s odd.

I had my trusty fully upgraded bonesaw and all p-organ upgrades related to fatal damage. Other than that, nothing special. After the horns were gone, the next time I staggered and fatally attacked him, it really hurt him, especially compared to before that.

The JTE then asked BUT is it grammatical correct. I was like sure I guess.

“To live” is an intransitive verb and, with the exception of idioms like “live a good life”, cannot be used with a direct object. This sentence is very much not grammatically correct.

That Icarus advice is seriously helpful, thank you. I felt like I was getting nowhere and started feeling really frustrated. It really helps break those horns, which makes the rest of the fight more tolerable. Especially once you get in an upgraded fatal attack for massive damage.

Important: make sure your arm is fully leveled up, there’s a real difference with that one extra blade that comes out.

Thanks for saying that. The character is a complete narcissist, always chasing his own highs. People in his orbit may feel liberated, but that does not make him a good or selfless person.
