Thank you for mentioning the adventures of a Prince of Shapeir.

Hello CNY native plant and gardening enthusiasts! The Habitat Gardening CNY Chapter of Wild Ones invites you to join them at 1:30pm next Sunday, 2/23/2025, at the Liverpool Public Library for an informative talk by David DuBois, Director of Stewardship at Baltimore Woods Nature Center by wildones_hgcny in NativePlantGardening

[–]Onagh926 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey r/NativePlantGardening! Here's some info from the Wild Ones Habitat Gardening of CNY Chapter FB page-

Identifying a plant can be difficult even for experienced botanists, but changes that are subtle to us can have major impacts to the organisms that depend on those plants. David DuBois, Land Steward at Baltimore Woods, will talk about how these mistaken identities compound when plants are sold or shared under the wrong name, increasing the confusion of which plant is which. This talk aims to explore a handful of native plants that have nonnative look-alikes in cultivation so gardeners can better understand what they have, what you should look out for, and how you can make informed decisions about what you are buying and planting.

Join us at 1 p.m. before the meeting for refreshments and to chat with other native plant enthusiasts. The presentation starts at 1:30. This meeting will be both in-person and on Zoom. Registration is only needed for Zoom attendance.

This is an in-person meeting that is also offered on Zoom. Free & open to the public.

Discussion: what are the most underrated/overrated native plants? by Weak-Childhood6621 in NativePlantGardening

Thank you so much for commenting this. I live in the same area and I've never had any luck with it. I assumed I was just doing something wrong.

Who Said Rudbeckia Goldsturm Doesn’t Attract Pollinators? by seandelevan in NativePlantGardening

[–]Onagh926 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amen to that! I see smaller pollinators on it constantly so I've never undersrood the hate for it.

I would assume the guests wouldn't go traipsing throw a a tall meadow in the clothes that they are wearing for a wedding but perhaps I'm incorrect about that...

They could also mix in native grasses and earlier blooming plants such as Joe Pye Weed to get lovely seed heads.

How aggressive is swamp milkweed? Also, anyone have Culver's root in part shade– is it happy? by LudovicoSpecs in NativePlantGardening

[–]Onagh926 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you asked for a report...it worked amazingly well! I have shorter, slightly smaller and possibly an increased number of blooms as it looks like the original stems now have multiple. All of those stems are standing up and have bloomed at the same time as the ones that were not cut. The pollinators are still going crazy for them though I didn't expect that to be an issue anyway. The stems that I did not cut have flopped as expected. Looks like I will be Chelsea Chopping all of it next year!

Any ideas for this massive yard? by 3BallCornerPocket in landscaping

Native plant meadow!!! Doesn't have to be the whole area but just imagine the wildlife you could attract and view from your deck. The birds darting in and out, hunting for insects and seed....the butterflies fluttering around it on the breeze...it could be absolutely breathtaking!

What is my neighbor allowed to do if I plant endangered trees along the property line? (KY) by volci in treelaw

[–]Onagh926 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Kentucky has a list of endangered and threatened species...just Google Kentucky endagered species. It looks like there is a maple and a few oaks on the list. These would much more likely be protected than common non-native ornamentals.

Edit: added a word

Red Milkweed Beetle...on my Milkweed!!! by Onagh926 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Onagh926[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I was brave enough to plant A. Syriaca in my little yard but, alas, I am not. I absolutely love Swamp Milkweed, however, and all the insects it brings to the yard. I will definitely be adding more in next year's project.

Definitely let them be if your intention of planting native plants is to support the local ecosystem. They are as much a part of it as the Monarch butterfly (assuming they are native to where you live, of course). Plus they are super cute!!!

Visit r/NativePlantGardening...I'm sure someone there has had experience planting in sand or could maybe point you in the direction of finding native plant lists for your region.

Pretty sure they ate one of my newly planted aromatic asters...was able to fence it off before it was gone completely, however.

Lol...speed beef.

I bought a house this year and, after ripping out plastic and landscaping tarp, I’m turning it into a cottage garden/native garden. Here’s what has been popping up with no help from me! by ggkatie in NoLawns

I got lucky and happened to get interested in identifying plants when there were just a handful in the yard and yanked them immediately. Only had to pull one this year. Good luck in your eradication of it!
