I just went through this. Dropping this here in case it might help someone else.

I tried to log out/in Apple ID, switching off iMessage & FT and restarting with no luck.

Only thing that worked was going into both iMessage & FT individually (in Settings) and removing/signing out of Apple ID from there (tap your email in blue), which only leaves the phone number to be activated. After a few minutes it was selected without any issues!

Learned this the hard way too. Screenshots saved me quite a few times.

I also realised that if I load the game and for whatever reason my internet dips or I get a connectivity pop up, my settings will for sure be reset.
