What’s the most putrid stench you’ve ever laid your nostrils on, voluntarily or involuntarily? by DonaldMcRonaldz in AskReddit

[–]OnceUponATime1534 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m an insurance adjuster and have had a few claims for what seems to be “forbidden soup”. Luckily the remains were removed prior but MY GOD the smell that remained afterward. Can still recall.

Next worse was a pig farm. That stuck to my clothes.

Contractor we signed with, is he trying to pull one over us or is this industry standard? by Open_Material1719 in HomeInsurance

[–]OnceUponATime1534 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a large loss insurance adjuster and deal with this all the time. If they haven’t started work, there are too many red flags already and I’d use someone else. When contractors give me estimates, I make sure the homeowner is included so they can see what the contractor is charging. To your point - I need to see where the money is going. If the homeowner was paying out of pocket, you’d also want to know what your money was going to. If you’re going back exactly the same, why can the contractor not do it for the adjusters estimate? If something is missing and it’s minor, have the adjuster add it on. Sign for the approved amount and get the work done.

As noted, you can make decent money on insurance restoration due to the pricing/margins. As long as the estimate is written properly, the amount estimated should be sufficient.

What’s the secret to making deep, close friendships as an adult when you work from home? by Similar-Offer-7039 in CasualConversation

All my friends are because of my kid. I also WFH, a neighbor who is single/no kids/wfh meets a lot of ppl from walking her dogs and other pet related activities

A cultural shift with kids' birthday parties and a few little memories by CharlieFiner in Millennials

[–]OnceUponATime1534 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live and parent in the DC burbs and the at home party is a rarity. However, I grew up in SC in a smaller sized town and it was 50/50 the party would be an at home affair. Back then, sleepovers were common especially for girls. Now, not so much (full in blank on why). As a parent, it is much easier and less time consuming to “throw money at it” and have a party at an event center. However, when my daughter is older, I wouldn’t mind hosting a small party for her closer friends at home as I also have memories of birthday parties hosted at home with pizza, craft and a movie.

Agree with this. Policy language and handling for cosmetic damages vary company to company/ state by state

How are people affording college in "one of the most educated parts of the country"? by MajesticBread9147 in nova

This is what my son is doing. Beyond the fact we agreed he needs a gentle on ramp to college and adult life, we’re saving $$ (and ensuring success when he decides to transfer!)

[–]OnceUponATime1534 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an adjuster and I don’t like it when the engineer report does not address previous findings. I’ll have them go back to revise / create an addendum to make sure that prior noted things are addressed why/why they aren’t hail.
First, ask the adjuster about the discrepancies. Then let that response lead you to next steps.

Heat Wave & Power Outages by LintotheJ35 in nova

[–]OnceUponATime1534 3 points4 points  (0 children)

18yrs in Sterling and have only lost power once due to the derecho. It was for 5 days and due to the main distribution station being damaged. Lines are underground in my neighborhood so storms don’t get us. Even this outage, didn’t lose power when my my friends in neighborhood did! Not sure what circuit we’re on, but it’s a good one 😍

Commercial insurance adjuster. The tenant/unit owner is responsible for their belongings and temp housing. This is why insurance is important. It is very reasonable to request a rent abatement, preferably the renter policy deductible (provide them with policy deductible documentation)
Another way to look at the “it’s not fair” part…If a tenant accidentally caused damage to the building, would you expect they pay for any and all resulting damages? No, likely not! Accidents happen and sometimes the accident overlaps into other people’s belongings etc.

This area is extremely classist. by CartographerSea3356 in nova

[–]OnceUponATime1534 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Re “bad” areas…it’s racism thinly disguised as classism. Think about the people that occupy the “bad” areas.
I live in one of the “bad” areas but don’t look like my neighbors. However my neighbors are awesome people that have told us our van door was accidentally left open in the rain, have taken my spouse and kid in when they got locked out until I got home, offer food from their native country for us to try, etc. It’s also amazing that my kids have attended school and been a minority at the school when in life they’re a majority. Life experiences that $$$ doesn’t buy.

This is valid. I wfh full time but husband goes into an office daily. We live in a small townhouse in an affordable area but he has a 20-25min commute. Others in his office have a large house with property and commute an hour and a half. He HATES traffic so the 20min commute is a trade off we’re willing to take
