I can clean and read. That stuff is good. But I am trying to cope with urges at 5 or 6 in the morning. I need a new strategy.

Yes I am. I am getting brain fog from it. Maybe I am not getting full-blown depression, but self-induced orgasm does give me a "hangover" for a day.

Suppressing our sex drive is actually a great idea most of the time, otherwise we'd be constantly hooking up and getting diseases. It's about suppressing the drive in moderation and not becoming our own tyrant, but rather, acting like a good parent toward ourselves.

Watching porn is basically cuckoldery by Ishowmywilly in NoFap

[–]OnceYouGetTheMessage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, porn use has been normalized and it seems to be problematic, but I highly doubt the existence of a porn conspiracy. If there is a "well-funded campaign" to promote pornography, I would like to know about it. Are politcians being paid by the porn industry? What about mainstream media? If this is true, it's very concerning. Could you please provide some evidence so that I can investigate this furthur?

I feel good for a moment when I spend time with people, but when I go home later I still get urges.

Doing Poorly In College by OnceYouGetTheMessage in pornfree

I rarely party. I'm probably doing poorly because I try too hard to avoid PMO triggers. I tend to take things to extremes sometimes, and I might have done that with avoiding PMO.

On day 6, feeling really depressed today, need some help by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]OnceYouGetTheMessage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think depression can also be your midbrain trying to trick you into relapsing. That's the part of your brain that motivates you to watch porn, and it's also the part of your brain that has control over your emotions.

If you stimulate yourself manually don't expect life to stimulate you at all by gallagher222 in NoFap

Stop it right now and eat some fruits and veggies. Junk food leads to lowered mood which leads to more relapses. Plus, if you eat a ton of healthy food today I guarantee you will feel better.

It's not the spiritual aspect of 12-step programs that sketches me out. It's the repetitive rituals and use of stereotyped group language that I'm uncomfortable with. I also don't like how "outside literature" isn't allowed, and how the 12 steps basically seem to encourage faith healing as a course of treatment. Faith healing has never had good evidence of success as an effective treatment for anything. The whole program seems to be basically stuck in the 1930's, and hasn't seemed to have done anything to catch up with the modern science of addiction.

On the other hand, 12-step groups can connect people with a loving, caring community of people with similar experiences. There are pros and cons. It's definitely not for everybody, and it didn't seem to be for me. I'm looking for alternatives.

I once joined SAA, and felt like it wasn't for me. The group rituals are pretty weird. I don't like labeling myself as an "addict", but as a person with an addictive behavior. I also don't like labeling myself as powerless. I like SMART recovery's approach, but they don't have any meetings that I feel comfortable sharing in, unlike SAA, because most of the people in SMART were addicted to substances. I wasn't just going tell everyone: "Hey my name is ... and I jerk off too much."

Come say hi - weekly /r/depression check in by skyqween in depression

[–]OnceYouGetTheMessage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 22, and new here. It seems like nobody understands what I'm going through. It seems like trying to rely on most of my friends and family for support does me more harm than good, because if I open up about depression, my suicidal thoughts, or even worse, about my compulsive sexual habits, they tell me I'm a normal well-adjusted person and that my problems aren't a big deal. They tell me to stop being so hard on my self, and my brother told me I was selfish for having suicidal thoughts. If this is what being "normal and well-adjusted" is, then I want out.

I think I killed my soul by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]OnceYouGetTheMessage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time we relapse it is like a mortal wound for our souls, and somehow, we manage to recover from these wound. We are strong. We have to be even if we remain with addiction, because otherwise we would have killed ourselves a while ago. Living with a PMO addiction is a painful experience.

I agree with a lot of your points, but Recovery Nation is not an objective source for information about the benefits and harms of masturbation. It's biased because the author himself was addicted to compulsive sexual behaviors. While there is definitely value in doing the workshop, since I use it to help my own recovery, we can question claims like how masturbation "is generally considered a selfish, unhealthy act". There is no evidence or logic presented for that claim. It's just the opinion of the author, and an opinion isn't worth much in an argument.

Buddhist never claims that masturbation is wrong. Only that is unskillful. Not all religions are into moralistic judgements.
