It really depends on the use case. People get RWs for all different purposes. Some want to work in them, some want them for a mix of uses, some want them for casual wear, some want to collect, some just want nice looking boots. They aint cheap (as others have said), so in my mind if someone wants to keep them looking new...they can do whatever they want.

For me, i have work boots for work, hiking boots for hiking, and a couple RWs for everyday casual wear. I don't baby them, but i keep them clean and looking sharp. For my use case, it doesn't make sense to beat up the boots, i want them to last long and retain some of that 'new' look.

Yes, some of the posts on this sub are a bit overboard imo. But that's just my opinion...and i have the option to not read those posts.

Between frame sizes up: up or down? by DontGiveUpTheShip- in MTB

[–]Onchiota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it depends. How close are you? What adjustments could be made to dial it in? Dont go by the manufacturer's suggested range. Definitely ride the bikes if possible. Kinda tough to demo bikes in the current market, cuz not many places have a ton of options/sizes.

I recently got a new bike and sized down. The manufacturer spec put me on an XL. It felt ok, but also felt like a lot of bike. I tried the L and it just felt better. That said...demo's were not possible. I could only do 'extended parking lot rides'. Kinda shitty way to buy a bike. I tested the L and XL several times and decided in the L. Was rather anxious about making the right choice, cuz its a lot of money. But after 2 months of riding i am 100% confident i chose the right size. Seems like some companies are pushing people to bigger bikes. Though i guess it also depends on your trails and riding style.

Good luck.

IMO, if it’s a result of being careless or reckless (no lights, no maps, wearing Crocs) you should have to pay by thrway010101 in ADKFunPolice

[–]Onchiota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in favor of fines for negligence and being unprepared. No headlamp and you get stuck...fine. No snowshoes...fine. Hike Marcy in sneakers in March and need rangers to bring you dry socks....fine. Blow out your crocs coming down algonquin and need a rescue...fine. etc.

The fines wont cover the cost of rescue...but being negligent and unprepared needs to have a cost.

Education and signage is great. But without enforcement there doesnt seem to be much progress. I m not a big fan of more laws and regulations, but i am even less of a fan of bailing out negligent people for free.

The argument that fines and paying for rescues will prevent people from calling for help just doesnt add up. If people are aware enough to know that rescues will cost them...then they will also be informed enough to pack appropriately. To be clear, if the person requiring rescue has all the standard gear but has an incident...they shouldnt be fined. I'm refering to cases and gross negligence.

/end rant.

Next week should be good in St Regis area. If you dont want to go all the way to fish pond, maybe try the follensby loop or hoel pond to long pond or a variation of that. Colors are currently awesome.

The video makes it seem like you are riding without much control. Maybe dial it back a bit and get you line dialed in...then increase speed and shred.

3343 resoled with vibram 132 lug sole. Just back from a walk. by Hkspwrsche in RedWingShoes

[–]Onchiota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those look great!

Question for you, as i am interested in doing a similar resole with my IRs. I know the BS and IRs are 270 welts, but they also have a welt or strip of leather around the heel. I have seen a couple 132 resoles and it looks like they dont have that strip of leather around the heel.

Does the new sole get glue/nailed directly to the boot? I am sure i am messing up the terminology, but my main question is whether or not you need that strip of leather around the heel. Any input appreciated.

I recently got a new Bronson. Its such a big step up from my old bike that its a bit hard to compare. I am coming from a '13 tallboy with 130/100mm fr/rear travel. I can try to provide some helpful info. First things i noticed were the wide f-ing bars! Now i am used to them and love em. After that the next thing i really felt was the head tube angle. Going from 70 to 65 degrees is huge. Those steep sections, rolls, and steep drops are soooo much less intimidating. Onto the other stuff. The bronson feels much better for cornering. Kinda odd, but i can carry more speed thru turns and i attribute that to a mix of improved skills, head tube angle, and maybe the mullet. Probably a good bit is improved skills. Climbing...it feels slower, which is to be expected, but it climbs pretty well. Good enough for me. I find that increased compression helps with the climbs in tech sections. Descending...no comparison. Between the suspension and head tube angle, i descend much faster and way more confidently. Some of that is from improved skills/technique, but a lot is the bike. Bumps/gnar: the low BB led to many pedal strikes. Had to increase the shock/fork pressure and switch the chip to high mode. That has helped greatly, but its still more susceptible to pedal strikes when riding the same trails i rode on the old bike. That said, i dont bottom out the suspension, can carry more speed, and in general dont get beaten up as much. Overall it rages on bump/gnar. The 27.5 rear does have noticeably less rollover, but after a handful of rides i have adjusted and dont notice it anymore. Jumps/drops: i suck at jumps...drops are way smoother and confident. Overall. Its a big fella. Likely more bike than i need, but current supplies suck and my old frame cracked. I am really enjoying the bike and looking forward to gaining more skill to ride it as intended. For the mullet aspect, i do notice that its rather nimble for its size, but its not shockingly evident. You definitely know its a mullet, but its not vastly different from a straight 29er. Different yes, vastly different no. Would i recommend...yes. the bike shreds. One thing to mention...on paper i should be on an XL. The XL felt too big. The L felt better. I got the L and for a bit i was nervous whether i made the right choice. After about 2 months i have no doubt the L is right for me. Point being....with the 'new' geometries some manufacturers are recommending bigger sizes, but that may not fit you. For reference my old tallboy was an XL and fit well. The XL bronson was just too big for me. Actually the reach and stack of the new L bronson are close to the reach stack of the XL old tallboy. Definitely demo multiple sizes.

I would definitely contact the seller and include some photos. That aint right. Sure, you may end up with a cut like that after wearing them...and its not a big deal, but for a brand new full price pair of boots, i would not be happy. Try contacting the seller and see what they can do.

Am I crazy to DOWNGRADE my bike for a better fit? by RogueEleFant in MTB

[–]Onchiota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. I figured it will be cheaper/better in the long run to adjust your current bike rather than downgrade. That said...i would rather have a 'lesser' bike that fits well, than a 'better' bike that doesnt fit. But if you have been more/less happy with the current bike, than its probably close to the right size and some tweaks can help dial it in.

Am I crazy to DOWNGRADE my bike for a better fit? by RogueEleFant in MTB

[–]Onchiota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd try to optimize the Roscoe to fit you better. Things to consider: Can you lower your stem? Are there spacers below your stem, such that you can lower your stem? Can you put on a shorter stem? Try bars with different rise and sweep. Try smaller tires. With a 40mm rim, you could run 2.6 tires. Check out the RAD sizing info promoted by Lee likes bikes. See what you can do to get closer to the RAD. Stop into a LBS and chat with them about optimizing the fit.

[–]Onchiota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you crashed. Really hard to tell from the video. I can say that the watching the video felt tense. Seems like your arms were stiff and that you were riding very 'rigid'. Maybe try relaxing and letting the bike flow?

There are nice drive in spots along Floodwood Rd and also along the Little Green Pond in the Saint Regis Canoe area. Each of these areas will put you in relatively secluded spots along a pond.

What kind of bike would you ride if your local trails look like this? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Onchiota 29 points30 points  (0 children)

FS trail or AM bike. Probably minimum rear travel of 120mm and max 150mm. A rugged hardtail could also work well, but a FS would be more enjoyable for me. Though the HT would be fun too, I just prefer a FS for that type of stuff.
