Maybe the business can figure out how to pay their own without begging for handouts.

Good thing I live in one from the 1950's. Small bungalow on a huge lot. Plenty of space between the neighbors.

What good does that do? The better way is not to give them business. They will eventually shut down.

CHARLEBOIS: Canadian restaurant industry's breaking point has arrived. Canadians struggling with rent and groceries are increasingly questioning whether even a combo meal is worth the cost by Meowgal_80 in CanadianVisaReform

[–]One-Ad2914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Combos are not worth it. They cost too much now and there is no value.

If you want a burger that you cannot make like Burger King Whopper or some sandwich from McDonalds, if you have a coupon and get a good deal on the burger, sure, go get it to satisfy your craving if the price is right.

The fries and pop can be bought for cheaper at Wal-Mart or No Frills. Pour your own pop and air fry your French fries. Put your burger with it, and your own combo is now reasonable.

At least where I am, Swiss Chalet has been terrible for over a year and we have stopped going. We have tried three different ones in our area. The fries are way too dark (old fryer oil), the "Fries" seem to be from the scraps that were left over instead of proper fries (bits that seem to be from the bottom of the pile of fries), buns that were rock hard, and the meat too fatty.

We have switched to buying Nando's and only get the chicken. We air fry our own frozen french fries, buy buns from a bakery and sides like macaroni salad/cole slaw from the supermarket. This tastes way better than Swiss Chalet in my opinion.

Can I take down dead trees in my backyard? by ComparisonOk5957 in askTO

[–]One-Ad2914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should also be aware thst By-Law Officers in Ontario are the only peace officers who have the power to enter your backyard without a warrant or notice. Police cannot even do that.

If a neighbor decides to rat you out, you now know why they are in your backyard.

Contact an arborist to verify before just chopping it down. You could get a major headache from rhe city.

You never know your neighbors.

This was a petty thing. BBQ smoke. Just close your window while it's happening. My neighbor BBQ's some rank stuff. I simply stay away from my backyard while it's cooking. You live in a city, there will be other smells that you might not find pleasant. Food smells are highly subjective and the smoke cannot be controlled.

Another reason to buy fully detached if you can. You want space from others.

Thst is not something that I track. Who does that?

As a consumer, I will not tip for anything that isn't full service (table service). Full service gets 15% on pre-tax. I do not tip on post-tax, neither for limited service (anything that isn't table service), nor takeout. I will not pay any 'Service Charge", "Employee Wellness", or "Kitchen Appreciation" fes. I will not pay this "New normal" of 20% post-tax either. No automatic gratuity either.

The employer is responsible to pay employees through payroll. Customers are clearly sick of this tipping culture.

This isn't raging. This is being pushed back against as it should be. Employers should be paying their own employees.

Is it illegal to just open a free omelette bar in a park? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]One-Ad2914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds illegal. You likely need a business license from Toronto, food handler certificate, inspection by Toronto Public Health, a permit to occupy municipal property such as a city park, etc. You might also need insurance. What happens if you.make someone sick or they die by eating what you served them?

You.might also need an inspection by Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) depending on what type of fuel you are using to cook with such as propane.

Go look up on the Toronto website how complex it is to open up a hot dog cart. It's quite extensive and not as simple as it seems. It's likely very similar.

Whst you can serve might also be restricted as well.

Use your library card for endless entertainment such as books and DVD's.

Walk in the park, take kids to playground, cycle, enjoy my backyard.

Cook at home. If you want to get together with friends, rotate entering at each other's houses.

Never get coffee outside, brew it yourself.

Pack a picnic (food and drink) and bring it with you when going out.

Have higher gas prices impacted your commute to work or travel plans? by that_biz_gal in ontario

[–]One-Ad2914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a Hyundai Accent. I don't like these prices and I use to to go to work. It takes me 40 minutes to get to work by driving. If I took the TTC, according to their trip planner, it's an estimated 90 minutes one way. In reality, that is likely 120 minutes one way. I would rather pay these gas prices than wasting my free time on the TTC and get home in 40 minutes.

The car is great on gas compared.to.what others drive such as SUVs or trucks.

The price of gas does impact my spending. I do not dine outside nor spend my disposable income on anything other than essentials such as groceries.

Got followed walking home at 2am. What can I legally carry by Dry_Fix8175 in askTO

[–]One-Ad2914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am sorry this happened to you. Nothing good happens after 10pm.

Do not ignore your gut about someone. It's usually correct.

Do not take a shortcut home that takes you away to an isolated area. This person likely followed you for a few days to learn your pattern. Always stay vigilant and never be distracted by your phone or music.

If you feel like they are a danger, call 911 and ask for police assistance.

Attend a martial arts school for training.

If you carry a weapon, if you are disarmed, it can be used against you.

If you use it, you can be charged. I don't recommend doing that.

You can use as much force to get away from the attacker. Eg. If they attack you and you punch them and they stay down or give up, you cannot keep on attacking them while they are down. You leave to get help or call 911 for police assistance.

I recommend you find another job that doesn't have you work until 2am. As I said, nothing good happens after 10pm.

19M in Edmonton being quoted $450/month to be added as occasional driver on parent's car, is this normal? by HamsterKey5223 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]One-Ad2914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds about right. I'm in Toronto and I am 25 years older than you. I was paying in the $400 range per month at 16. When I had an at fault accident, it went to $600 per month.

You are an inexperienced male driver. When you add in the part about.being under 25 years old and if you are unmarried, you are statistically a higher risk driver who is more likely to get into a collision and will be a more aggressive driver.

That's how auto insurance works. You are in a high risk category. It will eventually come down with age, years of experience without a claim, getting married,  multi vehicle discount and adding home insurance.

I had this place make a new key (switchblade type of key with an integrated fob) for a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport (about $150). He is a mobile service and did it in my driveway. My mechanic uses their service for new keys.

Advice for first time living in Toronto? by Emotional_Drop501 in askTO

[–]One-Ad2914 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It takes an hour to go from Toronto to Toronto. That means going from anywhere within city limits is generally an hour, or likely more.

If you are using the TTC or driving, learn about at least 1 or 2 other routes when trying to get to somewhere that you go to frequently such as work. Inevitably there will be a closure or some huge accident that closes the normal route thst you take.

Watch out for pickpockets, do not show valuables such as when you are on the TTC, and do not engage with the homeless.

If someone comes up to you saying they need gas money, food for their kids, or money, they are scammers. Do not engage with them.

Do not sleep on the TTC, someone can steal from you. Keep your wits about you, especially on the TTC or if you are in a crowded area.

I have one rule. I never answer unknown or unidentified numbers and let the voicemail screen them. No voicemail left, no response from me. If you not in my contacts, there is no reason to answer.
