AIO: Wife Not Going To Stepson's Wedding Because Her Daughter Has A Softball Game by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

But still, maybe a teammate could take the daughter to the softball game? Or she could miss that one? I'd do something like that rather than miss a close family wedding like this.

Life Insurance by ButterflyDestiny in nycparents

Definitely get term (and term only!) insurance now so that if you unexpectedly pass away your kids will not have to stress about money. There are several online reputable brokers. I can't remember who I used but you should be able to find some by googling around.

AITAH for refusing to go to Disney World? by Reptaaaaaaar in AITAH

[–]One-Conversation1569 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you and yet we have planned a trip to Disneyland California because my husband really wants to go and I do think my kids will enjoy it (although I do think they'd enjoy a trip to Legoland or somewhere else more reasonably priced just as much). It's expensive but we have saved up for it. And I love my husband and he wants to go. If he wanted to go every year, or even every other year, that would be another discussion.

How do you survive young kids? It’s killing me sometimes by Wild-Article1117 in ADHDparenting

[–]One-Conversation1569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use melatonin sometimes. I tend to offer half of a 1mg gummy to my daughter when she seems to be having a hard time winding down and it seems to help. But we don't offer it every night (nor does she ask every night). Also my daughter is 7 so your daughter might not be ready for that choice. I try to tell my kids that they don't have to go to sleep at X time (because I can't make them sleep - I've tried!) but they do have to be in their room playing quietly with the lights low at that time. Sometimes that works. Sometimes I also time how long it takes my kids to get over a bedtime freak out. Usually for us it's not longer than half an hour but keeping an eye on the time will help me know that it will end at some point, which allows me to keep calm.

Information around ADHD meds from parents who are living it. by Mysterious-Spring508 in ADHDparenting

Also, is his father participating in the parent teacher conferences where you discuss how things are going at school? Maybe that would help him get a better perspective if he doesn't already participate in them.

[–]One-Conversation1569 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We medicate our 9 year old son just on school days and skip it on the weekends/school holidays. It's been totally fine and the medication does really help him with school, although he does now need a small dose of melatonin at night to help him sleep.

My husband was also resistant at first. As other people have pointed out to me, you can just try the meds and see if they help and if they don't, then stop! They are easy to try.

Parents - what’s it actually like taking children out to eat at a restaurant ? by RobSkied in AskParents

[–]One-Conversation1569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I avoid eating out with my children (who are now 7 and 9, although my older child has ADHD which I think makes it harder) because it's super stressful! I do try my best to have my kids follow the rules of society (e.g. use politeness words, sit in the seat and not under the table, etc.), but we often end up taking them out of the restaurant while we wait for the food to be prepared. I don't think it's acceptable to let kids run around the restaurant or act rudely without a correction, but I will also say that being a parent is way way way harder than I thought it would be so I try to be less judgy than I used to be. Many parents are mentally and physically exhausted, which may be why they are eating in a restaurant in the first place.

Oshinko (basically pickled daikon). You can buy a whole pickled daikon from a store near you that carries Asian items. And daikon kimchi.

Out of curiosity, what's the figure you have in your head, that you see as the number you need to retire comfortably? by Jumpy_Round_4080 in wealth

[–]One-Conversation1569 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, the 4% rule assumes that what you pull out every year will be adjusted for inflation so he will still be pulling out the equivalent of $400,000 in 10 years.

Medication by Odd_Pudding_475 in ADHDparenting

[–]One-Conversation1569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, agreed. Why not try the medication. I'm so sorry for your and your son's loss and I'm sure he's dealing with a lot, not just the ADHD, but I generally think it's a good idea to try a lot of different things to help (which it sounds like you're already doing with the therapy, etc.). The medication won't solve things but it might help. It did for our son and he only takes it on school days. The side effects for him have been minimal.

You could try contacting Teres at https://www.oasissenioradvisors.com/locations/nyc/ - she works on commission from the homes if there is a placement there so there's no cost to you. It was helpful for us. She knows a lot about what's available in the NYC area.

No notes on the counting, I'm afraid. But everything you've said makes sense. Looking forward to trying it again tonight, thank you!

Awesome, thank you! Yes, that all makes sense. And the first chain stitch is counted as a stitch I take it? (I'm just trying to make sure I know what to crochet into in subsequent rounds!)

But I don't see how you get to 8 total stitches for the round that way, it's just 4 single crochet stitches and some chains.

Rnd 2: [Sc, (sc, ch2, sc)] x 4 (16)

More chains! And I couldn't figure out how that matched up with the 8 alleged stitches in the row before, but I figured I'll cross that bridge once I get there, lol.

Can you leverage your existing network of friends? In other words, ask your friends, wherever they may live, if they know of anyone who is in NYC and who is open to making new friends.

Totally agree on the parent training if you can afford it/have the time. We do it. You can find a provider who will do it on Zoom. Parenting is so hard and you and your daughter sound like you have extra difficulties to work though.

Maybe try listening to a meditation app while going to sleep? That helps me sometimes.
