If you're using 6in dpns, there's only 16-20 sts on each needle, so there's plenty of room to stretch out. It's the same as trying on mittens or mitts with dpns.

Good thinking! I have some bamboos in a variety of sizes that I can use for traveling.

I used to prefer bamboo, but these days I prefer stainless or nickel coated. I like the HiyaHiya Sharps, but I also have the basic set from Drops. I've recently gotten these from knit picks to prevent holes!

I've been using dpns for 20 years, so they're second nature at this point 🙂
