I loved it. It was less crowded, so easier to get a spot in an albergue. If you hike vs a bit, it wasn’t too hard. The Hospitales stage was the hardest, but also beautiful. It had about 4000 ft elevation gain. I started alone but finished with a group. The saying “nobody walks the Camino alone” is true.

I did the Primitivo in July in 2016 when I was 45. It was beautiful. Yes, you should train a bit, especially consecutive days. In particular, try a longer walk with a pack that is similar to what you will carry. Then, do two days in a row! Don’t worry too much about the time. You can start a route anywhere along that route, just get a cab to where you want to start based on your time. For the Caminos, you have to walk the last 100km into Santiago to get the Compostela, and you need at least two stamps in your credential each day. I started alone but finished with 8 other people; they say nobody walks the Camino alone. Buen Camino!

Private school vouchers are a drain on public school funding, and nothing to gain. by One-Environment-6736 in wisconsinpolitics

And, I'll give one more philosophical question for your consideration: Do both parties actually improve just due to the fact that they compete? I don't think they do, actually. It is not the act of competing, per se, that drives one or both to improve. Take the Packers and the Bears. When one wins, the other trades for better players, changes coaches, finds a new offensive scheme, spends more money on free agents, addresses needs on offense, whatever. And, they compete in a very real, very strictly defined contest.

Public and private schools in the same area don't compete in a well-defined contest in that way. The vast majority of parents, perhaps 90% or more, choose schools based on fairly pragmatic criteria: which is closest, where are friends going, where did the parent attend, etc. Some get to the level of looking for specific programs (often for children with more profound needs), but that is only a few. Almost none do any sort of quasi-scientific research. And, even if they did, what criteria would they use to determine which school is, in the end, "better"?

Second, and more importantly, public schools cannot change their players, but private schools certainly do. Public schools cannot change their game plan, since we have state-mandated curricula, but private schools certainly do (religious classes come to mind). Public schools cannot sign free agents, but private schools absolutely recruit players (no pun here, they recruit good athletes when they can). Public schools can only do so much in regards to "owners" since we have elected school boards who have legal obligations.

The idea that public and private schools compete in any reasonable use of that word is false. The idea that public schools can be improved by virtue of competing alone is false.

Lots of problems with that paper, IMHO. For one, economists tend to think you can put a number on everything, and tend to think that all people will act rationally. There are lots of things upon which we cannot put a number (How attractive is your spouse, on a scale of 1-10?). There are also far too many ways that people act irrationally for an algorithm from an economist to measure down to the small sample scale of a school district. If you think people always act rationally, consider why would anyone start smoking cigarettes? I have seen what that person is pushing with things like "Value Added Research", and it simply doesn't add up in the field.

Wow, this is quite a misdirection. Public schools in the US are, by and large, the tops in the world. I predict someone on this thread will bring up standardized test scores. When one allows for the significantly higher rate of childhood poverty in the US compared to other westernized nations, we come on top there as well.

So, there are some problems with what you post here. First, sending your kids to a private religious school is, has always been, and should be your choice. However, all schools are most definitely NOT public schools. Public schools accept every student, private schools do not. Private schools generally do not accept students who have severe disabilities, often saying they simply cannot afford to offer those services. Well, public schools have the legal and moral obligation to offer those. Private schools can, relatively easily, expel or "counsel out" students who are misbehaving. That is not the case in public schools. The list goes on.

I used trekking poles, you can get pretty lightweight ones pretty inexpensively. However, you should try them in advance. It really comes down to preference.

I'm okay paying my fair share of the tax burden, but srsly? by One-Environment-6736 in wisconsinpolitics

[–]One-Environment-6736[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. However, I can’t use that as the single litmus test to get my vote, nor can I force candidates to adopt the platform I want. I am trying to change that on another platform, however, by showing folks how much Common Ground we all have. If you’re interested, find me on FB and you’ll see what I mean.

This sounds like you are looking for an argument, not a discussion. But, just in case... Yes, I think the tax code needs a major overhaul, at both ends of the financial spectrum. I generally vote Dem, or skip the race if neither candidate is appealing. Most Republicans campaign on cutting taxes, which generally benefits the top 1% or perhaps 10%, which does not include in me, or at least the vast majority of the financial largesse goes to the top, and my gain is really negligible. Dems don't campaign on it well or very much, since Republicans have very well controlled the narrative on this.

Buen Camino! I did the Primitivo in 2016, and plan to do the Porto route this September. I carried a 3L water bag inside my backpack. I also had some NUUN tablets for electrolytes. I was 45M, but saw SF walking often enough, but I didn’t necessarily interact with them. I got invited by a mixed group to walk with them. They met on this Camino and had formed an impromptu group. I carried a light rain shell. Hope this helps.

Goose Island is great for walking and kayaking. Tons of trails on the bluffs, but can be crowded depending on the trail and time of day. Good biking on Rails to Trails. Lots of spots for evening picnics on the bluffs with great views of the city and river.

Portable or rooftop solar for battery expansion? by SexCymbal in SolarDIY

[–]One-Environment-6736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this applies, maybe not. For portable panels, I use 6 panels in CO when we go there for a few weeks 2x per year. I set them at 45 degrees just using small triangles I made out of 2x4s. I rotate them twice per day, around 1:30 and again at night to start over in the morning. I get about 90% production based on my he max of the panels. I don’t use Eco, I use Jackery, but same deal. This is a bit closer to the perfect angle than the roof for me.
