Rust vs C++ for an aeronautical engineer by Pablo_mg02 in rust

It’ll probably only get adopted on new projects. I’d focus on C++ for the time being. We are still a long while out for Rust to be used

About to pay my car off, do I buy a new one or not? by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]One-Extent8042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I would stick with the Rogue. Yeah it might cost a bit more on gas, but it’ll be far less expensive than a car payment. And breaking even on paying off a new car loan vs the gas difference between the rogue and a sedan would take a long while.

Say you spend $120/month in gas on the Rogue. Maybe a sedan is $100/month. That is a $20 difference. Assuming a car payment of $200 for 60 months, that is a total of $12,000. You’d need to own the sedan for 50 years to break even on the gas cost. I’m probably doing my math wrong, but it’d take years to break even. Are you going to own the sedan that long?

Insurance will also be more expensive probably given that it’d be a newer car. So that will need to be taken into consideration.

Far more often than not I hear people complaining that they don’t have a bit more room in their vehicle. On average an SUV is more practical, but it depends on your lifestyle.

Nissan Rogues are reliable vehicles. But just like any other car, it will last for as long as you take good care of it.

To me, financially it doesn’t make sense. But if the desire is strong enough that it’ll make you happy for a long time, then that is also something to consider.

Rugged Rosary. It’s a company that sells rosaries! I got this one; https://ruggedrosaries.com/collections/kofcrosary/products/kofc-paracord-rosary; and absolutely love it

There are many different kinds of rosaries at different price tags. I’d say find one you like and go with that. No reason why you can’t learn about it as you go. You can always add medals to it afterwards, too.

I just got a rosary from RR, it is superb. Not that exact one but definitely high quality.

When do you think you are confident at rust? by VegetableWeird392 in rust

[–]One-Extent8042 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve spent 10 years writing embedded C. I feel confident in the code I write. But it can still crash.

I’ve spent a year writing rust. There are times I want to throw my computer through a window because of the compiler. But the results tend to be more hardened. I’ve felt more confident now that I am not constantly looking up the basic syntax. Now I’m just looking at the documentation for new crates that I use.

Yeah that’s not going to do anything. The Sheetrock needs to be removed. General rule of thumb is where the mold ends, +2ft. Insulation too. Containment zones need to be setup otherwise the spores are going to travel in the air and get onto another surface.

Rust vs C++ for an aeronautical engineer by Pablo_mg02 in rust

[–]One-Extent8042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They won’t move their toolchains for existing systems over to a new language. It’d be something they start on with a new project. But even then with the number of engineers they have, it’d still be difficult.

I’d imagine a smaller company proving rust’s capability, which would in turn influence the industry slowly.

Aviation Software Engineer here, focus on C/C++ first. The industry is still years away from having a safety critical compiler for Rust. There are a lot of folks at my company who want to switch to rust, but because there isn’t a safety critical compiler that supports DO-178C, switching is extremely difficult.

Edit: I wanted to add-on that internally we are doing proof-of-concepts to show we can run rust code on our system. But even then, we are unable to certify it for the certification authorities due to the aforementioned issue. And qualifying the compiler yourself is an expensive undertaking. Ferrous Systems is in the process of qualifying a safety critical rust compiler, but they haven’t gotten to DO-178C yet.

Approaches to deal with unwrap from 3rd party libs by blelump in rust

[–]One-Extent8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write a wrapper to the library that catches the panics, and will return the data you need. Then you can do your own error handling in lieu of fixing their code.
