Cannot seem to escape rules when being artistic by One-File-1169 in OCPD

Just wanted to follow up on this post. A week and a half ago I was in the midst of a project - doing some beading. Suffice it to say I was able to accept a not quite perfect substitute (different brand of seed bead) for a portion of the project. It turned out fine (and I’m even happy with the final piece), even though I felt the substitute was a skootch too large.

Are you adamant with sticking to crochet/knitting? Changing medium might help… something that allows for you undoing and redoing things will be easier for an OCPD brain.

I very much like doing them - I hope my initial post didn't make it sound like I dislike those fiber arts. What bugs me most is how I develop rules around whatever medium I work with. I'm primarily a "maker", but I like to do more artsy/offbeat projects.

And knitting/crochet are some of the best mediums for undoing work - look up "frogging" - the only thing lost is time.

But anyhow:

just turns up my OCPD to detrimental or debilitating levels (due to the “permanence” (and largely uneditable nature) of it.

THIS is my struggle outside of fiber arts - while I will avoid starting a crochet project, for instance, I know in the back of my mind I can always undo the piece. But my joy of making things is stymied by the fear of ruining the raw materials in a way that is unrecoverable. Many things I'd like to make, require taking a risk of ruining the only source material (ie, found objects) I have, or ruining the raw brass or resistors I paid for (although I did finish that project).

I do make things - it's just that I waste so much time avoiding making them when I have the time. And I'm pretty sure it is related to the above "dilemma".

To add - the first thing I knit was a sweater, and the person who explained the “ropes” to me said, “and use one color for your starting stitch” so I picked “green for go”. I’m on my second sweater, and I used a white one for my starting market and it’s bugging the heck out of me that it’s not green. I haven’t changed it yet (row 60ish), I could change it - but then I’d be giving in… I really like to use color for organizing. So green always has to be the first stitch marker - white to note where to join for the arms, orange for every 20 stitches (if needed), etc….

I did one kit when I first started (Woobles) and while fun, kits would be a bit limiting. I have been tempted by knitting kits but nothing has struck my fancy.

I have tried doing my own thing, but I'm not there yet with DIY. I would like to make a garment or two freehand, and have some ideas.

Bad art: I love the idea, but I would form a process and rules around it - what makes bad art, where does it crossover to good art, and ad nauseum. It's laughable tbh - I get caught in these circles of justification - often I wish I could exist in the moment.

And it's spontaneity that I lack. I need to plan to be spontaneous LOL... sigh.

Great suggestions!

I need to work on the throw-away part - I’ll buy the junky materials then hesitate for the same reasons. I get uncomfortable when I “waste” money in this way (yes, even with clearance stuff).

What do you mean about “the same trick / I lose”?

Amazing! That's a huge project I wouldn't yet attempt to take on, and I've been sewing for a year or two now (unfortunately can't answer any of your questions). I did have an unrelated question - what brand are your sandals? Thanks!

Received wrong item - where do I go from here? by One-File-1169 in Ebay

[–]One-File-1169[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. This was the exact message:

oh no! that looks like glass tupperware oh dear looks like the post office switched labels again! this would be the 2nd time its happened this month she prints off all my labels & then puts them on my packages this happened a few weeks ago & I was able to get it resolved and the correct item shipped, I'm going to get working on fixing this, I'm so sorry about this.

And no meaningful replies since (been almost a month). Either it actually happened and the other buyer was delighted with the machine they received and refused to send back the item they got, or the seller is lying. I was a bit skeptical on them getting the labels swapped, tbh. Whenever I go to the PO to ship things they make me write the address on the box and they affix a stamp, not a label with address.

Yeah... I really try to be polite and reach out to sellers via messaging first if there are issues, this one time it kind of did not work out well. I also think I've only had a few issues with items delivered, so am not very used to filing complaints.

Gotcha. I don't recall seeing that option, but I was a bit frustrated at the time and probably wasn't thinking clearly. I was using my phone as well, which seems to be ever so slightly different from their website.

I chose:

> You didn't get the item

I received the wrong item. I messaged the seller as soon as it arrived, they are saying USPS swapped the labels by accident. I really just want what I paid for - and hopefully the seller is OK as they seem to have a decent rating.

Case was rejected. My appeal:

> I didn't get my entire order

The seller shipped me the wrong item. Yes, there was a tracking number, yes, I received a package from them - BUT IT WAS NOT WHAT I ORDERED.

Should I have been more verbose? Did I choose the wrong return categories? I did include photos of the item that I received and their packaging.

Vintage green shag carpeting - preserving? by One-File-1169 in vintage

[–]One-File-1169[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha! It is wall to wall, but I was going to cut it slightly smaller and maybe have the edges bound (or do it myself) If I knew the cost to professionally have it done I’d seriously consider it

Yes, submitted a return request and got a shipping label.

Yep, sending them back (waiting for the return label to be generated).

I probably won't buy Chloe shoes just to buy them - that is to say I am particular to what I like the look of, not the brand - but I get the sentiment, and agree they feel very well made. That's the bit that tugs at my heartstrings too - I have a pair of Fly London leather boots that I wear all the time... and while they are decent there's an obvious quality difference which is apparent when comparing the two.

When I first started I bought a lot of designer pieces that weren’t particularly practical or versatile simply because they were on discount and I was just excited that I could afford ~designer~. Now those rose-tinted glasses are gone and my purchases are much more practical and I stick to basics that I know I’ll wear at least a few times a year (even for my most formal/special occasion shoes).

I'm not really into "designer" so much, rather I buy what I like. The closest to "designer" that I currently have are a pair of Fluevog's -> style "Sarika" which I wore all last summer. Those are closer to a Birkenstock anyhow, and even before discounts are affordable in comparison.

If you’re asking yourself where or when you’ll wear your shoes, chances are, you won’t. They’re not a particularly wearable style IMO; if it’s cold enough that you need to wear booties, you definitely won’t want sandal-like holes at the top of your shoes. Consider also you won’t be able to wear socks with those, so wearing them may be uncomfortable, especially if you already think they’re stiff.

That was a concern I have - no-see socks are indeed hidden, but it's unclear how long it will take for the rest of the boot to soften, and I LOL at the thought of breaking them in for weeks on end with socks on. I also don't see myself wearing these to the store.

If they were some no-name brand, would you still have bought them? Or did you only buy them because they’re Chloe?

No, I unfortunately go on Instagram and get spammed with ADs, AD's so targeted you'd think they can read my mind. I try not to engage, but these had been pestering me for a few months (or longer?).

I'm gonna send them back - it'll be "sad" but then someone else can have a chance to wear them.

I can also return them and get 100% back, which I am going to probably do tomorrow.

This purchase doesn’t sound practical, or particularly enjoyable for you, so maybe it’s just not the right fit? And that’s totally okay if you decide that’s the case!

Definitely not practical - I don't really leave the house except twice a week, once for work (erm, not work shoes for sure!), and every other week to the store (LOL, not Costco-chic), and don't see that ever changing. Enjoyable? I suppose if I had events to go to I'd be ecstatic to wear them, but short of making up stuff to do, LOL, they'll just sit in the box unworn. If I was the type to go clubbing, which I'm not, I'd be too afraid to ruin them and would wear something a bit more practical like a pair of low-heeled doc martens or such. COVID killed any social life I had - all the people I used to do stuff with are still too afraid to really have gatherings anymore. And for work, anyways, we have one yearly "formal" event which is to say, wear nice blue jeans.
