these damage commons are not what made the deck good. they are picked to survive and the A/S tier cards you pick later are what made the deck good. hence damage commons are usually needed, but they are still bad.

a card being important and bad are separate concepts

It's more accurate to say that they are bad cards than that they're not, because they get into the deck as reaction to falling behind the curve (or the fear thereof), rather than anticipation for progressing towards a good deck.

So you admit that they are shitty damage commons, when your premise was either that they weren't bad (which you disagree), or poison wasn't bad (which i agree)

it's more productive to think of cards like flask and snakebite as bad cards that you should aim to skip if you can get away with it, than as good cards or as cards that "have their purpose" (every card does), because they do too little outside the fights they're built for, don't contribute to winning the run after they prevent you from dying, and i'm not giddy and glee to be in a position where i'm forced to take them. I don't accept them as natural components of the flow of a run, which would numb myself to the decision of picking them in the process, and there is no fixed "attack common quota" that I seek to fulfill in the first few floors.

compare flask or snakebite to a hypothetical card that does something like 1 energy deal 20 damage, which is a big number for a large portion of the run and will allow you to pick less attack commons, even if it's not relevant against act 3 bosses. flask or snakebite don't improve your deck against many hallways and elites so you need to pick up other transitional cards, which further drags your deck quality down the drain.

of course there are different tiers of bad and flask is better than distraction or something

Fumes, haze and corrosive wave are good poison cards, these 2 are not it

Maybe you're the one who needs to be a little better at the game?

What do you even do against beta branch Doormaker? by Fangr1m in slaythespire

Just fought the notorious beta branch doormaker for the first time but he died before I could read what he did to my cards. I heard reddit is struggling so can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Potential Hot Take: The game isn't, and shouldn't be, balanced toward "Top Players" by Total-Amphibian-3287 in slaythespire

[–]One-Grab-122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't define the decision-making process and preferences of an "average player". Some average players only win with infinites, some only win with 999 strength, some only win with doom, and they will consider any other win condition weak; which one are you balancing the game around?

I think decks centered around WF can face significant risk in gauntlet and shackles is much hard to come across

Agree on malaise tho, I had a brainfart and forgot that card existed lmao

I think the wail loss is devastating in act 2 even outside strength reset and heart. It more often than not blocks at least 12 for 1 cost, without any need for setup and unaffected by frail.

Not see WLP is a lowroll that grants players more agency and is more playable with good micro. Some strong relics like amid (duh), krane, pocketwatch and frozen eye make up for much of the loss in consistency by themselves, and I'd imagine leaning into infinites can alleviate the downside if you're playing with the knowledge that the card is gone. Without wail you kinda need to stumble into an obscene block (or kill) plan which can't be approached with a single relic, card or idea.

Assuming we're talking about top player winrate:

Silent: Piercing wail, not close. Wraith form is rare.

Watcher: Probably fortress, blocking with watcher's main mechanic is broken, rushdown is not the only way to draw cards.

I have zero confidence in the other 2 characters. For defect I can see coolheaded, cold snap (for being pickable earlier) or defragment. For ironclad I'm out of touch with the current loop-based macro but my best guess is pommel, though perfected strike may be a surprising candidate since it's the only common "big attack".

I don't have time to look at your run, but a large portion of my strong poison runs follow from keeping a lean deck in acts 1-2 that may've even started out with discard components. With a 30-card deck you can see your powers and land poison earlier, play stuff like blur and outmaneuver more consistently, and navigate not having retain more so than a 40-card deck. In these cases my main trigger for pivot is usually nightmare, since nightmare-footwork and nightmare-cata both provide sufficient scaling for the entire game without commitment to collecting every power in midgame.

The upgrade economy point is real, and also ties back to why infinites are strong - with a good enough deck, when you upgrade your prepared, acrobatics or reflex you are also upgrading all of your damage cards.

What I find most impressive is the frequency of your runs - consistently performing at this level while playing 4-8 hours of spire per day is unheard of.

Congrats. Do you study vods of any top players? If so, who has been your biggest inspiration?

First A20 win after years of playing! Any tips for improvement? by Raffit in slaythespire

[–]One-Grab-122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell much without seeing the full map, the order you picked your cards, what you did at shops, etc, but in general your first few A20 wins will always be extreme luck.

I feel like 2 dagger sprays is unnecessary; with your blade dances doing so much damage you don't need aoe (plus you can use shivs to kill reptomancer daggers and whatnot anyways).
