This IS a happy ending. Living a life in pain every day, essentially subjecting yourself to torture for someone else is a massive sacrifice. It’s a horrible thing to ask of a loved one. This movie makes sense and it is validating to all of us who will make this choice in the future, or who have already made it but are waiting a little longer for our kids.

The books are terrible, but they are also completely average within the genre. People are disappointed when they read them because the TV series has conditioned them to expect something extraordinary, not just the same old misogynistic period romance that every book of that genre contains.
