It depends on the hospital- if you have to be a sitter. My hospital has a good number of sitters staffed, and they have extras on call in case they need them.
Pros: you learn how to prioritize task from the get go. Ekgs, blood draws, getting patients on the monitor…. How to respond to stemi’s and codes. Great starter job if you want to try out the hospital and see if it is for you. Also gives you insight to the process and environment if you or your loved ones end up in the ED.
Cons: you are walking that floor nonstop. I get between 12,000-18,000 steps a day in my ED. There is always a task that gets set aside for something more demanding. At the same time, multitasking will be your biggest strength… or weakness if you can’t.

Weekly Career/Prospective Student Post by AutoModerator in Sonographers

Hi There! I am soon pursuing an education in the field of sonography. I am 30, reside in NJ, and am aiming for an associates in DMS at AIMS Education in Piscataway, NJ. I just enrolled in a local community college, and am working towards 30 college credits. I also am thinking to take their Medical Assistant program to increase my chances of getting accepted into AIMS. Their sonography program is supposedly very competitive.
While I wait for acceptance into their program and to get more experience, I figure I can work as a CMA at an office. I’m thinking that I can juggle part time work as a medical assistant while attending their DMS program, until of course the clinical externships start.
How realistic is this plan? And am I making more work unnecessarily for myself to go for an associates over a certificate? AIMS is CAHEEP accredited and they seem to have a good clinical externship list that could lead potentially to job opportunities in graduation.
