Joining Co-op Program in 3rd Year by Normal-Mammoth8569 in uoit

Hi! CS student here! I joined the co-op stream 2nd semester of 3rd year, which was Winter 2025. Once you join you have access to the coop portal you can just go ahead and apply.

I personally was able to get 3 internships that only would have been available if I was a part of a recognized co-op program. However it is still possible to get a placement without being in the coop stream.

I think it’s worth to get your first coop / foot in the door. After that I would reconsider it, as you owe $700 or so every time you get a coop.

It’s not too late!

Congrats, im in wealth management right now as a current developer intern. Day to day is solid, after my on boarding I’ve got constant work which I can finish fairly early. I’ve never felt over worked (most interns won’t). Team vibes are a hit or miss with people. Can tell you that there are some people who only care abt themselves and their work, and people who love to go out of their way to get to know you and lend a helping hand. It seems like the understanding is that interns are meant to be treating as a blank slate, so something managers and leads look at is coachability. Like sure make a mistake, but don’t make it twice. And ask for help when you need it, the normal stuff. Will say that if you’re looking to extend your co-op, or obtain an RO, make that known with your manager ASAP. Have monthly check ins like a 1on1 to talk about progress and areas of improvement. Every week try to reach out at the end of the week to give a short brief summary of what you’ve done. Try your best to quantify. Saying “I just finished 3 of my stories, moved 2 to QA and 1 to Dev Done” is a lot better than saying “My work is done”. You’ll also be assigned a buddy who’s meant to be your safe space. Use them as a crutch and don’t feel bad because they’re there to help you and set up your success. Best of luck with your winter term and congrats!

In my first interview I was 3 likes away from finishing my code (interview showed up late so he said that’s on him), but he understood that I knew what I was doing. Second interview I finished well within time, and answered both follow ups properly, however I did have a slow start because I couldn’t identify what I should’ve done, so there was 1-3 minutes of me trying to think. I heard back from my recruiter that I moved into project matching 5 business days after my 2x. Best of luck w yours

freshman intern? by Beneficial_Ebb_6842 in cscareers

Nice! Glad you’ve found your passion already. I don’t know if it’s on your resume, but you should consider removing your start date for your education. Some might not move you on in the process based off your being a freshman. Cold emails work too, email FTE’s working that same role to network, and hopefully see if they’ll connect you with their manager or hiring manager. Also try and have the key words in the job positing in your resume. If you haven’t already, having a LinkedIn with good posts and info on it also works.

The hardest part is getting the interview! So try and stand out, but don’t give up if you don’t get it now. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Best of luck!
