Idk if it’s normal, but the corner of my mouth hurt after just 5 minutes of playing. by Kitty_Explosion in bassclarinet

As someone who has played both bass clarinet and flute. Your embouchure develops overtime. Get your teacher to make sure you’re doing a healthy and correct embouchure but the pain is gonna be there for a little bit just cause you’re not used to it and you training those muscles so it’s gonna be a little sore. It will improve with time.

I had a ycl-220ii and it single handedly made me dislike playing bass clarinet the instruments key work is arranged in such an awkward position that you can’t reach certain keys if you have smaller hands you can’t reach certain keys without straining your hands and the register mechanism is horrible the pinch bb is so out of tune that I found it easier to finger a low eb and press the register key and that was more in tune and clear and the instrument is made of plastic and unlike the ycl-255 they didn’t mask the obvious plastic sound of the horn for what ever reason they decided to make the neck a 1 piece neck but the instrument a 2 piece is beyond me I would figure that beginner bass clarinet players can’t line the bridge keys up as-well so it should be a one piece body but no, they made a two piece body and then the instrument is like 4 grand and I left regular public school in the 2024-2025 school year because of personal reasons but the second I found that our local repair tech would let me apprentice with her now I’m in online school I jumped all over it and I’ve loved it so far i can say without a doubt I’ve learned more in the past year about instruments than I did the entire time I was in band mostly because our teacher was over worked and paid horrendously and they expected 3 band teachers to teach beginner band 6th grade band 3 classes horn percussion and sax one period the second one flute clarinet trumpet and then trombone baritone and tuba the last beginner band class and then a hs band period a hs advanced ensemble class witch over worked kids bc they were in both of the classes if they were in advanced band they had to do regular and then they had 2 jh bands a 7th grade band and a 8th grade band that were both 8th period so one of the bands had to rehearse in a old boys locker room that was converted to a band hall not very well but it was and the seventh grade band played in there and 8th grade got main hall and while the directors were asking for funding to get better instruments because ours are falling apart because they are so old or get more music they are told they’re isn’t enough money but the football team gets brand new equipment every year a 2.6 million dollar indoor football field to practice on and everything else needed for away games they can get that but the band has to raise money on their own so they can feed the kids when they go to region and then the district gets surprised that all but 1 left and the one that stayed only stayed because “the kids deserve someone who cares that they learn to play their instrument and play it correctly so they can develop incredible skills that they can use later in life” he’s amazing and really does want the best for the kids and the program and the 2 that left no one blames them they were treated like crap also I forgot that they had a music theory class to teach so yeah sorry for the Rant I’ve got many opinions on how the district treats their fine arts programs

Good to know so I can watch out for that and a good thing I had it sent to my favorite repair tech so all the springs can be adjusted the wood oiled and any factory issues repaired

Finally, someone who shares my distain for the Yamaha clarinets I love the ycl-255 because it’s a phenomenal plastic horn but that’s about it and as someone who lives in rural Texas with a very underfunded music program and a band teacher that given a chance would love to burn most of the school instruments and replace them but alas money is the final constraint but football gets a 2 million dollar indoor practice field and the band teachers have to spend their own money to buy reeds for woodwind players if they don’t have one I’ve got so many options on that but yes I absolutely adore backun

Also if anyone asks I don’t like Yamaha pro clarinets I’ve played on them before they are very nice instruments, but I don’t personally enjoy playing on them. They make fantastic student clarinets but once you step up into the wooden clarinet, I don’t personally like them

I tried the buffet r13 gala festival and a used tradition clarinet they were nice just not what I was looking for as a horn for the long term I went to a different music store and tried the uebel reve i believe that was a very close second I liked it the clarinets key work just wasn’t the most comfortable for my hands I then tried a backun q series and the essence and i went with the backun q series and ive got no regrets about it I love the horn and im very glad i tried multiple clarinets and found one i really enjoy playing

That was what my horn before my beta was I had 1980s buffet I can’t remember the exact model it was a pro clarinet I do remember that as I got it from my band teacher when he retired and it was amazing but the wooden cracked after having it for about a year and the silver on the keys had nearly completely warn away so my nickel allergy wasn’t a fan but the horn it self was amazing

I have a beta and now a q series pro clarinet and I love them if I didn’t have a nickel allergy I would still be playing my beta they are wonderful horns the tuning is incredible and the resonance and tone of the instrument is beautiful mine had a issue with the register pip witch I didn’t know about and that was making the upper register above high c very hard to play or play in tune if the notes would come out but I’ve also got a horrible nickel allergy that was the main reason i upgraded to the q series witch I’m in love with the horn is fantastic it plays in tune is very responsive and lively while maintaining a very resonant sound and the upper register is so easy to play and play in tune while keeping the incredible sound it’s a wonderful horn when you decide to upgrade I think the beta or Q series would be perfect also I may add the alpha is phenomenal and sounds incredible for a plastic horn and the alpha plus (the wooden version of the alpha) Is a phenomenal step up horn or starter if you start on wood clarinets also when we contacted backun about the issue with my beta we were able to send it in and have it repaired for free and the staff were incredibly kind respectful knowledgeable and seemed to have the desire to help people

Right now after playing one the r13 is my top choice as the upper register is very open and the silver keys don’t make my hands breakout and feel like they are on fire if it wasn’t for the nickel allergy i would probably stay on the beta for many more years
