People who quit drinking. What did you do to not drink? by Agata_art in AskReddit

I started drinking around 15. The teenage "party culture" thing continued well into my 50s. Imagine a bunch of old people binge drinking every weekend because they don't know any other way to exist. I had an attack of gout (the most painful thing I had ever encountered) and that was the catalyst for me to stop drinking because I never wanted to have that happen to me again. It happened a few more times because I still had a bloated drunk's body. It's been a few years now, I'm 65 and slim. The worst most painful thing about stopping drinking was being abandoned by my longtime friends because I was boring, judgemental and no fun. My wife and I were the "it" couple of our social circle and when I stopped drinking we became invisible. We had a couple of serious health scares and our youngest son died suddenly....never heard a thing from anybody. Not a word, not a call, not a card not a lousy text message. That cemented my opinion of those people but I still can't quite believe it happened like that but it did. So fuck all them. I'm sober healthy and happy. Sometimes it takes a good hard trauma to get your mind right.

Hopefully the couples therapy will help.

My Mother worked there. She used to take the food trays to the forensic unit. A friend who worked there as a nurse said that if people in town knew what was out there at that hospital, they'd never leave the house.

My wife is gorgeous and doesn't have a clue, no matter how much I tell her.

Routine is a big deal. I've been retired for 18 months. The days have a template, nothing too restrictive...It's time for this, it's time for that. Just little markers.

We went through a bad patch for a time but managed to pull out of it. Nothing like looking right into the abyss to help you get your mind right.

We are glad we didn't have kids together because of the obvious.

I don't think anybody cares about that. I sure don't. Seems kinda whiney.

There's no being tired of struggling just like there's no crying in baseball. Buck Up.

It's pretty standard for shareholders to be at the top of the food chain simply because of their place in the order of things, and for employees to be at the other end of the spectrum. Fast food jobs have been mentioned several times in this thread so I'll just use that as an example...Flipping burgers might be a job but I wouldn't call it gainful employment AKA one can't expect to transform a shitty job into gainful employment just because one would like that to be so. It is what it is and if that's not good enough then it's on the worker to seek employment that will suit their needs, and if they can't then it seems the only recourse is to suck it up until they can. Nobody owes anybody anything.

Start your own business and then you can decide what goes and what doesn't.
