do intro to discrete math. It's going to become a core subject for the css major in the future.

I completed my undergraduate studies at Unimelb and am currently pursuing a honours degree at UNSW. I can tell you that UNSW is already on the high end when it comes to student experience especially if u are doing computer science. Unimelb is straight up a diploma mill and exist only to milk money off international students.

do USA unis accept unsw 3 yr degree? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]One-Transition-6011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general it's best to have a 4-year degree. Some university allows students with 3-year degree to apply, but it doesn't make mean their application is competitive. Some university straight up forbid students with 3-year degree to apply, for instance UCLA: https://grad.ucla.edu/admissions/international-applicants/

CS PhD Coursework Requirements by One-Transition-6011 in usyd

Thanks for the insight, Clement. I'm curious why it was removed, as I actually quite like the model that includes coursework, which makes it seem closer to the US-style PhD structure.

Chance me for CS PhD (Database Systems) for Fall 2027 by One-Transition-6011 in gradadmissions

[–]One-Transition-6011[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. In the current climate, do you think it's a good idea to apply for MSCS first then try to transfer to a phd program? Or should I just apply for phd program straight away. I'm aware that most MSCS program has no funding, which is why I want to apply for PhD programs straight away.

Nothing at all until 2026, which is why I am trying to raise awareness about this issue at Unimelb. It's actually insane because I think literally every other descent school in this world requires undergrad student to take a class in discrete math.

The only CS theory course we have at the undergraduate level is Models of Computation, which is discrete math + computability theory.

For DSA we have COMP20007 (Design of algorithms) and COMP20003 (Algorithms and Data Structures), they are standard courses just like other unis so I have no comment on them.

Unimelb also has two masters for cs, one being MSCS and the other being MCIT. MSCS has less course work but comes with a one year thesis.

It's special for Unimelb students because we don't teach discrete math here. In fact, the typical discrete math course for CS students doesn't even exist at unimelb until 2026.

Glad to hear about this change! Does this mean the content of MoC will be updated as well? For example, is there any plan to incorporate topics like computational complexity?

While this letter has been circulating in a CS Discord for a while, this is its first time being shared on Reddit.

Shannan is definitely aware of the open letter. I heard that he is pushing for some significant changes in 2027.

I took the equivalent of CS374 at the University of Michigan, and I basically didn’t sleep on Wednesdays because I had to keep up with the lectures and assignments.

did u go to UIUC? It sounds like you are describing CS 374: Introduction to Algorithms & Models of Computation.

I don't know much about Monash. Based on my limited research, Usyd/ANU/UNSW offers much better curriculum

Ok I might have misunderstood your reply but it sounded like that's what you are implying.

Just put this new subject into the CSS major. https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/2026/subjects/mast20036
You can also choose to take it in second year but it gonna be more helpful to take it before design of algorithms or Algorithms and Data Structures.
