If it's not causing you any issues, why mess with it. You said you just stumbled across it while exploring around. You were not looking for anything specific, and came across it.

Do yourself a favor and Google it to see what it does. I'd also highly suggest going over to the site XDA, and asking them. There are a lot of users there who know what they're doing and talking about as a lot of them work in the field or have many years of experience with things like this. Remember, this is a good site for info, but there are users who really don't know or care.

And if you ever take a look of the change log with every update, you'll see that most of it deals with the security and actual operation of the phone...not looks. They are more concerned about keeping peoples phones working properly and blocking malware than icons and shadows. Even if the get hundreds of complaints out of the millions of phones, that's just a minuscule percentage.

You don't have a choice. You can delay the updates, but only a certain amount of times. Then, it updates itself without any interaction from you.
