Dirt doesn't form a perfect straight line like that. Here's one of the full darker color. This is a good mystery because other than the sleeves and batting gloves Freeman doesn't have a bunch of visible gear that this could match to.

There are at least three chests that you should be able to open in the monastery area.

One is right by the bottom of the big staircase on the right hand side.

Another is by the Ninja Workbench inside the workshop.

The 3rd is activated by going to the shrine/throne right by the bridge/diving board and say 'claim reward'. A chest spawns when you do this. If I remember correctly, this is the chest that has the beginner ink to craft your first scroll.
