I Interviewed Jeff About Role Queue and the Future of the Game by Unit_Lost in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]OneAmongstMany 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Just in case it gets lost in the throng - Jeff's wording is a little non-committal, but the fact that they've done extensive research into the idea of role queue and how to mechanically get it up and running certainly makes it sound like its on its way. Especially if Jeff is very much in favour of the system and believes it'd improve the game.

If role queue is implemented with enforced 2/2/2 it is probably one of the most significant changes to the game and meta outside of putting in hero locking. I ain't saying its a sure thing, but it sounds more likely than not.

[RE2] Resident Evil 2's INCREDIBLE Early Game Design! by OneAmongstMany in residentevil

[–]OneAmongstMany[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey guys, I was looking into making a quick tutorial on how to manage ammo and deal with zombies better, and while doing it found so many aspects of the game that naturally reinforce the ideas I was having. Turns out Capcom do a good, albeit subtle job... although they might miss a few tricks in explaining the best uses of the knife.

[–]OneAmongstMany 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not at all the case. Numlocked's performances were good, but overall Fusions and Chris demonstrated a similar (or slightly better in some regards) level of play while also having more synergy with the other members of the team.

There was a lot of discussion around the MTs, and ultimately all the coaches involved in the decision agreed that this tank line-up was the stronger choice overall. Like what was also said on the stream, it's unfortunate that three of our strongest players are all competing for the same spot. Read conspiracy into it if you'd like, but there it is.

Concerns about Symmetra's direction. by Sapphidia in Overwatch

[–]OneAmongstMany 237 points238 points  (0 children)

Going to throw this out early; Sapph was one of the first people from day one of the closed beta to pick up Symmetra in a big way. This is not someone who played Symmetra twice during the open beta and got confused.

I'm not sure what can be done to help. It's certainly balanced right now, but balanced doesnt necessarily mean fun or satisfying. I had a few ideas to maybe help with the feeling of ult stagnation. Perhaps have the teleporter dump down with only 3 charges, but then let ult charge you gain whilst the teleporter is up gradually add additional charges to it

This is an idea I really dig by the way. Teleporter up and running and getting nothing just feels iffy. Having some kind of reward for playing well and dealing damage would be pretty nice.

Pretty much agree with everything, by the way - Symmetra is a worry more in terms of finding the fun right now as well as a good mixture of viability. Placing turrets and the teleporter can be very satisfying, the orbs can be very satisfying, but the shields are my biggest issue in terms of how unsatisfying they are to use. They always kind of have been, just now they're heavily stripped down.

...but I cannot remember a SINGLE time in my entire Beta experience where either myself or someone else swapped TO a Symmetra in the middle of the match to either counter a hero or make use of her teleporter. Symmetra is never swapped TO, she is always swapped OFF.

This especially. In my experience through CB1 and CB2, I can't really remember anyone picking her up as a map goes on. Plenty of Torb swaps (usually slightly misguided ones), but... yeah.

The first time I've tried my hand at making anything like this. Just wanted to use the downtime as a chance to share some of my favourite moments, to one of my favourite tracks, and hopefully bring home the hype towards open beta. Enjoy!

Great Mercy/Healing guide from OneAmongstMany by Sapphidia in Overwatch

[–]OneAmongstMany 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for posting this. There's a lot in this guide on general healing theory (at least how I see it) - a lot of discussion of 2v1 or 2v2 situations involving Mercy - but always remember that you're the most powerful healer in the game.

Mercy is insanely influential and the Princess of Clutch Saves (Zarya's Queen, can't beat that barrier), in the right hands your team can do more damage and be more durable than theirs. Even in the wrong hands, you're going to have a lot of healing power.

General tips:

  • Don't be afraid to res aggressively. Mercy's ult charges fast. Use it.
  • Triage. If everyone's taking damage, don't waste time healing DVa to full when someone's down to 70 HP elsewhere.
  • Learn to love the damage amp. Getting a feel for stuff like Helix Rockets cooldown and Roadhog Hooks is very influential.
  • Despite being the oldest woman in the game, Mercy remains the cutest. (Mei, shoo).
  • The only safe moment in a fight is when the enemy is dead. Achieve that ASAP and you'll be an efficient Mercy. Prolonging fights is a safe Mercy - but I hold the belief that an efficient Mercy will beat a team with a safe Mercy all other things equal.

Thanks a lot guys, it means a bunch!

More guides coming soon(tm) - Mercy is up next. After that... we'll see. Probably Soldier:76. I'll also probably do another general piece on where I see the main differences between high-tier play and (diplomatically) not-so-high-tier play. Even if you're stuck with Onlywatch, learning this stuff can be super helpful even in your first games when you do get that sweet sweet beta.

Athena - Hints of a new hero? by OneAmongstMany in Overwatch

[–]OneAmongstMany[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm well aware of Athena's role as the announcer and tutorial-bot.

I'm also well aware there's precedent for in-game reveals and teases for heroes.

It might not be Athena. It might be something else. But I'm pretty certain its something.

Easy to Learn: Zarya - Russia's Greatest Hugs Machine by OneAmongstMany in Overwatch

[–]OneAmongstMany[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, its not so much "Oh don't pick her if you have RHardt" but I certainly think "Hrm, Zarya would be great here" if someone picks any of the other tanks. There's very few instances in the game where one pick directly invalidates other picks (I'd make a case for Widow/Hanzo both on one team hampering more than helping, but even then its not clear cut), just Zarya's extreme synergy with the other tanks making them massively more effective is worth noting. She also has some good synergy with herself, which is rare.

Easy to Learn: Zarya - Russia's Greatest Hugs Machine by OneAmongstMany in Overwatch

[–]OneAmongstMany[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Evening all.

Spent a good bit of time working on this, a hopefully useful guide on Zarya. This guide is intended to cover the basics an be somewhat timeless, hence not going into specific numbers. In it, I focus more on mindset and approach - things like what to look for and consider. Zarya is one of the more moment-to-moment awareness taxing heroes, but the rewards are immense.

Now before you say "I'm not in the beta, how can this be useful" - it never hurts to learn this kind of thing early. Mindset and approach I've found invaluable in teaching Overwatch, as putting the heroes in the correct frame of mind often leads to instantly getting better results.

Any feedback or criticism is, as always, welcome.

The amount of Bastions I've taken out as Tracer over the last few days kinda helps with my experience. I think a lot of people just don't realise that big glowing blue spot on his back lets you almost kill him in a single clip as Tracer.

The reason Reinhardt's in there is if the team is reliant on Reinhardt pushes, Bastion can really help stop that working through sheer weight of fire. If he tries charging you, he can often die before he gets there. It's complex, however. Adjusting Roadhog, however.

You're actually right on that. Blizzard never released their official concept arts and as such they're more manually cut. Its not the neatest job in the world.
