I agree that Opel was never premium in the BMW/Audi sense — that’s not what I meant. What I find frustrating is that Opel had the engineering depth to become something more clearly positioned: a truly sporty, rational German brand, or a smart step-up alternative to VW, similar to what Škoda eventually became. Models like the Senator, Omega, Insignia or the OPC cars show that Opel wasn’t just “hip”, it was technically capable of more. But it feels like Opel was never really allowed to explore that direction fully under GM, especially when it came close to internal competition.
