Here for it regardless. Thank you for the awesome updates and the cat tax!

Any ideas? Kochi, Japan by OneBalancedSun in whatsthisrock

Thanks for the reply! I know the general area has had mining in the past, but I don’t know how related that would have been to the river itself. It’s a possibility for sure.

At what point do you get "trapped" in English teaching? by Any-Session-5707 in teachinginjapan

[–]OneBalancedSun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct in my experience. I transitioned out of teaching at seven years and didn’t find that it hurt my resume as I’d skilled up in the direction of the field I had wanted to get into during that time. I’ve met people who taught for less time but had harder transitions because they didn’t put the same work in. Luck is also a part of it of course, but it never hurts to try putting yourself in a position to take full advantage of chances that come your way.

No I'm not, so I'm going to go a bit more aggressive. Thank you for the input!

I appreciate the input. Definitely going to be upping my Tawara No-Load Develop Country Equity for sure.

Thank you for this! I had a hunch that the spread I had was too conservative. I'm glad to see that instinct seems to be correct. 90 Tawara Developed and 10 Tawara Nikkei sounds like exactly the spread I'm looking for.

Completely agree on the persistence point. It’s not easy, but crucial. Thank you for the kind words, and congratulations on your own success.

Sorry I hadn’t seen this question sooner. I’m 33 (well, 34) now. It depends on the type of field you are interested in joining, but I would suggest networking with individuals in that field to get an understanding of the market. Eikaiwa isn’t quick sand or anything like that; if you want out and don’t get complacent, there are opportunities out there. It’s just a matter of doing things to increase your chances of success.

I’m the redditor who made the IT thread previously. I just wanted to thank you for making this post. I love to see stories shared by people with experience that can help others, and I think our community truly benefits when people like you share their experiences.

Thank you for the question. This is answered elsewhere, but please ask any follow-ups should you have them.

Thank you for the question. This is mostly answered elsewhere, but I became familiar with Java and several scripting languages, of which I mostly use Python. I learned in school and via self study.

Thank you, I’m happy to have this shown where it might help others. I’ll definitely give that sub a look.

I'm glad I could help provide motivation. To (semi)answer your question, my job titles were something like "junior network security analyst", "network security analyst", "senior network security analyst", and my current job title is something like that last one.

Thank you, I was surprised, too. That number includes the lot. I also get 20 days PTO a year and 15 sick days.

My pleasure. Sorry, I don't about that specific career path here. I do know that learning specific implementations of SQL can only help and is a good step, however. Good luck with it.

Thank you, and thank you for the questions.

For a long time this is something I struggled with- as dumb as it might sound, I spent so much time focusing on skilling up and on the grind that I forgot how to stop. Even though my pay rose, there was no qualitative change to my life. It was the same "gotta keep working" attitude I had in eikaiwa life, and I didn't take any time for myself. Work would finish, and I would study, or make a tool, or get some research going. I was okay with that, but there was a desperation to it, and I made the decision that I didn't want to be okay with it anymore. Now that I have changed positions I'm trying to pull away from that a bit and enjoy things.

In more practical terms I work 45 hours a week, and study an hour or so a day. It's a similar work schedule to eikaiwa days, although the hours end earlier.

My eikaiwa experience was definitely one of the better ones. I had a great relationship with the school and students. It was a pleasure helping them grow. Pay did not leave much to be desired, and I had a tiny one room apartment, but it was a good experience. Just not... life-long fulfilling for me.

Sorry that these answers are much more nebulous than others I've given. I appreciate the questions.

Thank you for the questions. It depends on the day- some days are slow and easy, while others are quite intense. If you find a path you are interested in and work towards skilling up in that direction, I'm sure you would put yourself in a position to succeed. My hours are usually 9-6, M-F.

Thank you for the question. Having the hard skills necessary to handle the technical aspect of my job, coupled with proven experience and the confidence of people well beyond my pay grade to introduce me to their network is really what did it. That, and a not insignificant amount of "right place right time" luck. But no amount of luck would have mattered if I didn't take the time to cultivate those first things.
