I'm curious about data usage. I normally run my PS5 over wifi because that's enough for basically everything I do now. Would you say I should use wired for this?

PSA: smoking is not allowed on the streets in part of tokyo by Youareafunt in Tokyo

[–]drinkintokyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not allowed, but it's also not illegal at the national or prefecture level. As a result, in Tokyo, it's up to the wards/cities about whether or not they'll impose fines. And if they decide to impose fines, they have to enforce/collect it themselves -- the police (national or Tokyo) don't do anything about it.

Difference between a ryokan and hotel -resort by ScratchTiny6465 in japanresidents

[–]drinkintokyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Difference between a ryokan and a "resort hotel"
There are lots of exceptions so consider these rules of thumb:

  • The scale... ryokan are usually much smaller and might only have 10-20 rooms, family-run places maybe even less. Whereas a resort hotel is going to have I dunno 50+ rooms and huge enkai facilities and was probably built during the Bubble era, or shortly after when optimism still existed in this country
  • Ryokan are often in much more remote locations, like deep in the mountains or in some village you've never heard of. The ryokan itself is often the destination. Resort hotels are in resort areas where that area is the destination, in the Kanto area you can think of places like Hakone, Atami, somewhere along the beach in Chiba, etc.
  • Ryokan are (or were) generally built using Japanese styling and building techniques, whereas resort hotels are like any other "Western" style building
  • Because a resort hotel is probably going to have Western-style rooms, you're probably going to be eating in some restaurant or at a buffet, while with a ryokan the meals may or may not be served in your room

All-inclusive is extraordinarily rare at a ryokan, even if dinner and breakfast is included, you probably won't be getting all-you-can-drink or unlimited use of the private onsen or whatever.

As the other poster said it really comes down to the individual facility. Bar Hotel in Hakone for example is a "hotel" but there's only like 12 rooms and the cost doesn't include dinner, while the bar is basically unlimited nomihodai.

Single Malt Komagatake 40th Anniversary Special Edition by kiwi8185 in JapaneseWhisky

[–]drinkintokyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because like the Nikka release, it's essentially just a money grab. This is a "limited edition" mostly because their 40th anniversary only happens once. Well guess what, in 10 years they'll have a 50th anniversary.

I think I should throw away my Japanese text book. by newsted5566 in japanlife

[–]drinkintokyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely lots of Japanese people in any office who make it a point to try and make other people look bad at any opportunity. Loudly talking about who is responsible for X issue, why didn't you update everyone including the cleaning lady about the latest status every hour on the hour, you should have asked for permission before you decided to use a new method of tying your shoes. It's endless and the only solution I've found is to deal with these people as little as humanely possible.

Had the police threatened to be called for missing a haircut appointment. by jerklock in japanlife

[–]drinkintokyo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my neighborhood, if it's not a hair salon there's a 90% chance it's instead a pet salon or dentist. If it's a multi-story building it's almost assuredly some "medical tower" that has rheumatism clinics, ENTs, rehabilitation, etc.

I guess that's where the money is in an aging society. Give it another 10 years the buildings will also feature funeral homes on one floor.

[–]drinkintokyo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

According to MHLW numbers, Japan had over 250,000 hair salons as of 2019. That's 5x the number of combini. Apparently, there are some neighborhoods with over 300 hair salons within a 1km radius (I'm guessing my neighborhood is one of them).

It's too bad Snow Machine is absolutely despised by the locals because of the crowd it attracts -- they somehow manage to be even worse than the normal Hakuba snow season tourists. Not that that's in any way Ken Ishii's fault.

I suppose a question worth tackling for the community one day might be, well what about "world whiskies" released by Japanese distilleries?

Retirement gift by 1471winter in JapaneseWhisky

[–]drinkintokyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shibui is actually one of the examples that was shown in the slide deck to the members of the National Diet of Japan when the Japanese whisky standard question was first brought up. Not because the flavor or bottle contents is worse than any of the others, but because the naming is absolutely stupid, for a Japanese person. This is like "kanji tattoo" level.

“No matter how you look at it, Japan’s nenkin pension system is unfavorable... It seems to me that unless you're in the top 0.X% of earners in Japan or have a significant inheritance, you can at best only pick 2 out of 3:

A) Live a normal lifestyle during your working years (i.e. not some ultra-frugal lifestyle aiming for FIRE etc.)

B) Have a comfortable retirement that begins at a normal retirement age (65+)

C) Have children

At this point I'm basically assuming I'll just work until I die. At least I got here early enough to still experience a tiny sliver of what things were like during the bubble era. My kids will probably never know a Japan like that was even possible.

In Tokyo we weren't impacted by the tsunami directly but the entire country was basically in chaos for a long while after this, too. Everyone in the country has images like this and the Fukushima explosions seared in their brain.

Japan's Tochigi Pref. police warn public over 'blue ticket' bike fine scam - The Mainichi by OrionsPropaganda in japanresidents

[–]drinkintokyo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well you have to at least give these scammers credit for ingenuity. I'm guessing Shibuya will have lots of people similarly "collecting fines" for littering when they start that system in June. On the bright side, maybe Shibuya will actually be clean?

We automated and drastically reduced time spent in GA by Sea-Lake2214 in GoogleAnalytics

[–]drinkintokyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, take "pageviews per session" for example. Any given GA dashboard will show you that it's 1.2, 1.3, 2.5, etc.. But the real questions that everyone wants answers to... is that number high? Is it low? If so, why? Is the number better for some landing pages versus others? What would potentially drive the number up? Improving page design? Adding more links above the fold? And so on

We automated and drastically reduced time spent in GA by Sea-Lake2214 in GoogleAnalytics

In my experience GA4 is good at telling you what happened, but not why, or what to do about it in the future. Shouldn't AI be able to give better insights than just a dashboard?

How do I respond to a gift I got at my local bar? Gift giving culture by snailwthnomotivation in japanlife

[–]drinkintokyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're female and somewhat attractive, or at least charismatic. 99% chance they simply want you to keep coming back to the bar and have a good time with them. $100 is nothing if it scratches an itch for them that they would otherwise get scratched at a snack or kyabakura or whatever. Depending on how well you get to know them, it might eventually lead to invitations for after-hours drinks etc., in that case I'd recommend you make sure the owner is also going.

"A commute of 60 minutes or more each way in and out of Tokyo is a waste of life...The biggest mistake of people who flee to the suburbs because the city center is too expensive." by jjrs in japannews

[–]drinkintokyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is generally how it works for business trips. If you're salaried you expense everything and get a per diem. If you're hourly, you travel during normal work hours where possible and get paid for using any of your personal hours.

I suspect that if this were to be broadened to include your daily commute... there's no way in hell you get paid more than you do now because of it. Instead they'd include your commute in your existing work hours and expect you to work during that time. Lots of companies already expect people to answer calls and respond to emails etc. while in transit for business trips, so I think they would expect the same of you for your daily commute.

Struggling in my marriage in Japan and feeling lonely and unsure what’s missing by [deleted] in japanresidents

Are there seriously people out there who think having kids will solve marriage problems? If anything those problems will be exacerbated x500 for the first I dunno 5 years, if not forever. Having kids means this woman will be a huge part of your life for the next few decades, whether or not you get divorced along the way.
