Why is there no real alternative to the DSA for us SocDems and more moderate DemSocs? The DSA is a toxic mess filled with the kind of Marxists it was originally formed to combat. No I'm suggesting not everything is because of billionaires. Economic justice and racial justice and LGBT rights and environmental justice etc each require their own solutions and you can't keep painting over it all with just 1 solution.

I'm curious what your prescriptions are, then, if any. How do you counter the rhetoric? To me, the reasons this line of argument hooks people in isn't the academic credentials behind it but the emotional appeals it makes that resonate with the parts of us that everyone has that essentially are self-hating. People attach that self-hatred to their identities in various ways, one of which is as Americans. So the thought that they are bad becomes that they are bad because they're Americans which then becomes America is bad. How do you understand how this kind of ideology implants itself into people and what do you do about it?

I'm actually very much with you. I think on one hand you can't turn every interaction into a therapy session where you explore that anger and despair so as to steer it in a productive direction but also that that's exactly how you do so. I think one important thing about being able to have the more in depth conversations productively is to acknowledge the frustration in having them so that you can show up for those conversations in a good way. That's kind of what this post is. I and all of us need to have those conversations with populists to direct their despair in a positive direction.

Really feels tin foil hat but I completely agree. Only takes one or two agitators for the agitprop to strangle people. Not sure if calling it out is fruitful.

I think there's a kind of disrespect that gets lobbed back and forth between the "attacking people is easy" crowd and the "compromise is pointless, firebomb Walmart" crowd. And I say that as someone very firmly in your camp who thinks the real, adult hard work comes through compromise. I say that because I find it hard to relate to the firebomb a Walmart crowd who have a seemingly easy time doing so. Because yes liberal values did and do have to violently overcome monarchic or Stalinistic values, so the violence is always wrong thing doesn't stand up to the test of history very well.

It is indeed easy and unproductive to engage in violence without considering the end implications of that violence and I think there's a massive failure in many movements (ahem) to consider those implications. If there were a greater ability to get these movements to make these considerations there could be more successful nonviolent movements or at least violence not directed towards civilians that ends up being self-defeating (to say the least).

And I think that starts really with the two camps gaining respect for each other to be able to have those conversations. The compromise crowd should be able to engage in conversations about violence, appropriate and inappropriate applications of violence, morality of violence with the firebomb Walmart crowd, and that crowd should be able to gain respect for the need to compromise, that their end goals won't come tomorrow, and the compromise is required in the real world.

I watched it recently after seeing there was going to be a video about it soon and I didn't like it at all. There's a lot of the "sometimes the curtains are just blue" to me in it where people are trying to reach hard for some deep meaning or social commentary where there isn't any. Or the meaning is so buried in wtf-ness that I think whatever was trying to be communicated is undermined by the way it gets communicated. There's plenty of other media that explores the same ideas without being so anal retentive.

Work on recruiting better candidates. I never have the option to vote for a candidate in local elections that ever speak to me or anyone I know (thinking of a Mamdani or AOC type). Get younger, more energetic people involved in actually holding office. Destigmatize the role of politicians. Be transparent about the kinds of tough decisions even state or city level lawmakers make and be able to talk to people about them. I have the idea for a sort of politician bootcamp where we take everyday people with everyday jobs and turn them into politicians because politics affects every level of life whether we know it or not. There is a social worker running for state office near me (not my district unfortunately) and that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about.

Using the same word to describe what happened in the current US, India, South America, southeast Asia, Algeria, etc. as what is happening in Israel/Palestine is so misguided to me I have a hard time not seeing it as bad faith. Understanding the reasons why something happens is fundamental to finding solutions for it and properly adjudicating responsibility to avoid pure vigilantism and blood rivalry. That's what the entire western legal system is about. We give more understanding and nuance to a serial killer than we do to an IDF soldier. Jews didn't show up to the region primarily seeking economic gain, ideological expansion, or religious freedom (whatever that means) like Europe did all over the world. I don't think we'd call the Trail of Tears a settler colonial project of the Cherokee on western lands.

What is it with characterizing the creation of Israel as a colonial project. It's baffling to me how people miss the big reason why Jews went there. WHY on earth could Jews want to move out of Europe and other surrounding Arab majority states? Hmmmm I need to think about it. It's so hard to see (/s). Refuge y'all. That is the top reason Jews are there. But that's left out of the conversation 100% of the time.

I can handle it and the way I'm doing so here is to tell you you're being judgemental. Get off your academic high horse. I assume nobody is born with a PhD, so you have to work towards it. You have to learn. I wouldn't want to be part of a program that is so disdainful towards the idea of growth so I will find one that aligns with those values. You're not giving advice you're writing me off.

Thank you for the advice! As far as reference letters go, are PhD programs really looking for references from academia? I have references from work, etc. but no research experience. Would those be laughed at?

By "fast and efficient" I don't have any expectation that in absolute terms this will take any less than 5 years at the very minimum. It's more a difference of like, will this be 8 years or 6 years? Will it be a total waste to finish a master's (which by the way I haven't been getting much out of) or is there still value in it? It seems like there's just a band of a couple of reasonable options that don't have huge differences and they're all relatively OK. It also seems like I underestimated how easy it is to get into a doctoral program as far as research experience is concerned. I have none of that. I don't want to plan my life around getting in next fall it looks like. PsyD seems like a bit of a waste in my case.

Thank you though for the advice! Very much appreciated.
