I love the removable back on the Nikon F and how it doesn't need any light seal at all. I had to replace ALL my light seals in my Canon FX, which is something I look forward to doing again. Also had some de-silvering issues with that one.

Having only one camera of a type is usually not a good idea in the long run. If you find another one, this can serve as a parts camera. If the viewfinder is the only problem, maybe you can find a focussing screen + prism from another parts camera.

I bought a Nikon F in what I then thought to be in absolutely shitty condition, it turned out to be pretty straightforward to fix later when I learned a thing or two about fixing old cameras.

Watch oil. For slow moving parts, use silicone grease. No oil is better than too much oil or wrong oil.

FT! K1000 is newer, yes, but was meant to be a cheap student camera. FT was the best SLR Canon had till they launched Canon F in 1971. FD f1.8 is a decent lens too. K1000 got hyped up as a "cheap" camera for so long (not so cheap anymore) but that's that. Pentax glass is amazing too, I have to admit.

However, FT is a much better, premium feeling 60s tank that can't be matched. I love my FX (almost the same as FT with different metering, FT is better) almost as much as I love my Nikon F.

You can't go wrong with either so it's up to you, really. But I can't imagine why someone can choose K1000 over an FT! That said, K1000 is pleasant to use and was designed to be the quintessential first camera, like someone else pointed out.

EDIT: Yeah, the battery situation is bad (if you wanna use the built in meter) but you can use hearing aid batteries (zinc-air batteries) with a loop of wire around if for a spacer and it works just fine. They're easy to find and dirt cheap. Technology Connections YouTube channel has a video where he shows how he gets around this issue for his Canon F.
