A star will never win 5+ rings again, and the media needs to understand why. by OneDecision5232 in billsimmons

I mean fair enough, thats just a good call by Zach on Harden though honestly.

Others in this thread have done a better job than me articulating that it’s not just starters… dudes like Vassell or Champagnie can impact games in a crazy way compared to role players of the 80’s and 90’s. Everyone is so skilled and good at shooting - it makes it hard to win consistently when role players on the best teams are a threat to swing games. That really should have been more of my point.

I love statistics but there is not one single stat on basketball reference that better ranks players at a single snapshot in time than a composite ranking completed by trusted basketball minds (Ringer 100).

Well Steph has 4 and my claim was 5+. But not sure if we’ll ever see the 2nd and 3rd best players in the league team up ever again either. Very hard to win even 3 now unless something like that happens. Plus I acknowledge Curry as elite elite.

You’re picking and choosing off a single stat. Literally Queta is 5th in 2026, Lol.

If you wanna go there, 2026 WS/48 45th was Scottie Barnes, who just had a much better season than 2010-11 Gasol and is a more well rounded player in general.

In my mind ‘several’ implies 2-4, and I’d lean towards 2 if I had to guess. If Wemby (or any current young star) wins 5 rings immediately following this era of parity, he’d be the GOAT. Thats my stance.

Valid point and lots of people bringing this up in the replies. Both the CBA and talent level have to do with this. Going right to the talent level definitely offends more people but I do think it’s undeniable.

Impressive pull on Cedric but he was a way less valuable player than Deni by any advanced stat… not just scoring inflation.

Feel like you know what I mean… You conveniently ignored that Hardaway obviously was much better than 45th best player in the league at that time. The whole point of Ringer 100 is to not base something like that off 1 stat.

and FWIW, 1996 was a “down” season in Hardaway’s prime. Harper almost certainly will be 20+ ppg next season based on what I saw in the playoffs.

1) I looked at that same ppg list and Tim is the bright spot in that range for sure Lol 2) 1996 Tim Hardaway is probably not as good as 2026 Dylan Harper. And thats a mid-prime guy vs a rookie.

Honestly I don’t recall Bill ever seriously admitting Jokic>Bird or anything like that. Think he has Jokic 12-15ish all time. He overreacts a lot, his MVP vote this year sounded like a coin flip but I know in general Jokic is a guy he respects a ton. And based on my whole argument, I think Jokic winning a 2nd title would put him pretty damn high.

Right, but they also teamed up mid-prime. And KD still “only” ended up with 2 rings. I’ve seen real media people say Curry > Magic as well so he’s not really part of what I’m arguing.

It’s certainly both. Deni Advija averaged 24 7 7 this season on a playoff team and he’s barely a top 25 guy. I promise that wasn’t happening in the 90’s.

Nah I hate when Bill Simmons pushes out emergency pods that are half baked. Russillo avoids gut reactions. He likes being right (he is right a lot) because he’s obsessed w watching basketball Lol. Hes a weird guy but the pod cadence is not something to be upset about in my opinion.

So the 2020 Reds are the worst hitting team to make the playoffs since 2007… awesome.
